The name, “Deer Snacks,” is an homage to many Vermonters’ feelings about wild apples. The gnarled fruit that we find while foraging has, for decades, been chalked up as food for wildlife, ill suited for human consumption. We know better: Every now and then, we discover wild apple trees producing remarkable fruit that cries out to be turned into cider, and that’s the fruit we harvest by hand and take home to the cidery. Of course, we always leave a few snacks behind the for the deer.

Funky, mild musty aroma. Taste is dry and funky horse blanket. Acidic aftertaste.

Cans from Shacksbury. Highball @home. Murky green tea gold. Tart, prickly nose. Sour pickle. Sweet kiwi. Soggy flowers. It honestly smells good. Taste is a less intense Sidra. Less off-dirty funk, more saturated apple & plenty of citrus acidity. Just under seriously dry. No rubber, maybe some negligible plastic off flavors. Yeasty, papaya-ish lingering finish. Better than last year's. Prickly, strong carbonation, yeasty feel, parching tacky end. Good.

Can from Appalachian. Tasty Bev pint glass. Soft, weak, soapy head, hazy pale amber pour. Sour apple/green melon/berries, active fermentation, grass. Nothing super inviting. Soft, green/unripe & aspirin bitterness. Lingering pith, subdued Sidra funk as it warms, but can be almost totally avoided when cold. Very dry, very thin, quite bitter. Foamy & almost non-existant carbonation, creeping acid that also lingers, moderate to strong booze. Slightly better/rounder in the can. A bit harsh, but plays good fan service.

Can. Pours a clear pale gold with a white head that dissipates completely. Aroma has rich apple with a dryness leading and a hint of sweetness as well. Flavor combines sweet apple with a dry apple finish and a hint of acid coming through.

Can from Holiday Market. Pours a clear silver-gold with a quickly dissipating bit of white foam. Apple and yeast on the nose with mineral, sticks and crabapple tart aromas. Smooth and light on the palate with some funky must, apple and light pear flavors. Lingering tart apple and musty hay on the finish. Very clean, tart and funky.

4-pack from my local hipster-mart. Pint glass. Opaque yellow orange brew. Smells of curiously orange-like sharp apples. Lemon, pepper, seltzer. Taste is gently fruity. Hints at wood. Building acidity that gives way to floral orange citrus. Light carbonation. Simple, but not too simple. Similar to Spritz, but bigger, cleaner & quite easy to make disappear. Really great cider for $4 a can.

Very nice. Tart red/green/crisp/sharp apples; fruit peel/herbal/floral/grass/yeast earth; lt pepper/funk. Bone dry/crisp carb. Lingering acids/tang/tannins. Min pucker/astringent. Smooth. Great apple complexity/balance. Spot on farmhouse cider as expected
