One of the first Tall Poppy beers, from a new micro brewery near Antwerp I follow with interest, as they have presented some pretty interesting and well-executed beers so far. Opens with a lot of hissing and foam creeps out of the bottle neck slowly afterwards, but nothing unmanageable. Very thickly membrane-lacing, creamy, dense, yellowish beige, closed and long-retaining head on a pitch black beer, looking more like a stout than a porter. Aroma of green coffee beans, soggy walnuts, coffee grounds, soaking wet leather, 'Haagse hopjes', sage, dried prunes, treacle, old raisins, caramel candy bars, pipe tobacco, dry liquorice, cloves, fried black olives, chicory, dust, touch of iron shavings. Sweetish onset in a very malty way, some estery fruitiness in the form of dried banana and dried prunes but cleanly so, prickly carbonation (a bit much for the style perhaps, with minerally effects), long-stretched, bittersweet maltiness with more emphasis on toasty and eventually coffeeish bitterness than the initial toffeeish sweetness, very nutty as well, as in toasted chestnuts; ends rooty bitter, chicory-tinged with the roastedness accentuated by a firm, leafy hop bitterness and adorned with a smoky, tobacco-ish accent. Leaves enough of the toffeeish malt sweetishness to remain juicy and smooth, and therefore easy enough to drink. Missed this one when it was first released but considering other ratings, it seems that some time in the bottle did this beer good; whether it qualifies as a brown porter is a bit open to debate, as its blackness and roastedness are fully developed and make it easily qualify as a dry stout to me. Regardless of that, this is cleverly done, well-balanced and classy for a small, beginning brewery and a clear choice for an international (or rather: Anglo-Saxon) approach which has little do to with Belgian brewing heritage. Brave and bold, and again motivating to keep track of these guys' works.

GUSHER ALERT!
Clear dark brown to black beer, creamy to aery beige head, unstable, falls down quickly. Aroma: very roasted, yeast, overripe fruit, overripe banana. MF: overly carbonated, way to much to be enjoyable, medium body. Taste: very bitter roast, some overripe banana, bit of chocolate, coffee. Aftertaste: more roast, bitter, slightly sweet, bit watery.

Thanksl! Sampled draft @ Modeste 2017. Very dark brown, mocha bubbles. Nose is herbal leaves bark. Empty weak liquorice herbal bark, leaves, thin, basic herbal, liquorices, weak chocolate. Not very robust but some nice parts.

Appearance: no head, since the sample wasn't 100% fully fermented yet. Deep dark brown colour. Chocolate, tobacco, cigar leaf, cypress. Outstanding nose. Chocolate returns in the flavour, with liquorice, Haagse Hopjes, and again a bit of tobacco. Finish yields more coffeeish notes. Well bodied, quite slick. Very good porter tout court. For a starting brewery, this is stellar. Thanks to Jo!
