A new limited edition ale, the Traquair 160 Shilling Ale will pack a punch with an ABV 9.5% and its name derived from the old shilling system, used in Scotland when beer duty was introduced in the 1800’s and was determined by the strength of the beer. Using a mix of roasted and crystal malts and conditioned for up to three months before bottling this promises to be an exceptional ale with a 10 year shelf life.

330ml bottle from Traquair House on a Mountain Bike trip to Innerleithen. Drunk at home. Pours a deep brown, good cream coloured head. Vibrant treacle and sweet malt nose. Continues to taste, exceptionally smooth moderately full palate, lovely moist fruitcake, amber malt, caramel with distant port-like suggestions. The best of the best.

Very dark red, clear ale with a nice thick head. Smells of malt, dried fruit and a touch of caramel. The fruit I. The flavour is a little tarter bit there's a mix of fruit in there along with a heap of malt and a little caramel again. Rich and smooth, this is a nice strong ale.

0.33 l bottle at Goblet Beer Store, Zagreb. Shared with PBFpivica. Dark amber to ruby red, lasting tan head. Fruity malty aromas, at first there is caramel, toast, dried fruit, then red fruit, molasses, brandy. Alcohol on the side. Sticky toffee flavour. Metallic flavour. Not sweet. Light finish. Alcohol hidden.
