By the time ESB launched in 1971, breweries had long been in the habit of producing an ‘ordinary’ bitter and a ‘special’. Our special was the irreplaceable London Pride so we broke the mould and added a pioneering third style: an extra special bitter, brewed to a stronger 5.5% ABV. Since then, ESB has gone on to become a recognised beer style, imitated in breweries right across the world.

1/2 Pint Cask @ Parcel Yard. Clear amber, tanned head. Nose is sweet caramel, biscuit, sugar, toffee. Taste is caramel, toffee, sugar, finish is dry leaves. Very dry bodied, leaves and sugar. Quite nice and so much better than the limp bottled version even if they are scored the other way around on RB.

Vom Fass im Union Jack Berlin 2017-08 getrunken. Sehr gut balanciertes Bitter mit feinporiger Schaumkrone, deutlicher Beerenfrucht und etwas Hopfenbitterkeit. Ein richtig tolles Bier.

Sampled on a blind tasting with Dr. Beer. Smell is moderately fruity. Mild, creamy, coockie dough maltyness. Some sugary undertone. Taste is full malty, mild hops ( bit grassy ) very low bitterness. Easy drinker, but with a hopped undertone (underneath the prominent maltyness ) . Decent , rather creamy body, with moderate carbonation.

Bottle. Mahagony/amber coloured. Small head. Aroma of toffee and british hops. Taste is caramell, biscuit, toffee, nuts, butterscotch and some citrus fruits. Low carbonation. A fine ale but too much diacetyl for my liking. Still good though.
