Opaque brown. Small head. Malt aroma, and very good malt flavor with caramel. No malt presence. This is a doppelbock, and a fairly good one comparable to Optimator. Thanks to Akevitt for sharing.

Bottle 0,33l. Deep red/black. A small head. Fruity aroma. Sweet spicy flavor with fruity hints. Sourish aftertaste. One of the better beers in Norway this Christmas!

330ml bottle @ RBNAG’07 and one more sample alone. Beautiful clear dark red body with a big dense beige head (short lasting). Aroma of slightly burnt malt, brown sugar, dry fruit, alcohol and finally a hint of liquorices. Flavor is more roasted malt (not burnt as in aroma), coffee, chocolate, dry fruit, brown sugar. Full body, not so bitter and quite sweet. Very nice indeed, but a thing the balance between sweetness, bitterness and alcohol could be better with more alcohol and bitterness, eventually less sweetness. One more batch next year and this would be perfect, congratulation Berentsen, you are on the right track!

A few 330ml bottles during December. Pours a yellow-light brown head fading to a filmy layer after a while. The body has got the right xmas spirit with its ruby black colour. Smoky smell at first before the sweet malts take over. Plain milky chocolate taste leads the way and is present throughout. The chocolate profile is backed by notes of integrated liquorice and a light touch of yeast. Discreet warming alcohol in the finish. Rather creamy mouthfeel. A welcoming addition to the Norwegian range of Jule Øl (21.12.2007).

Bottle. Yet another example of the hopelessness of the Norwegian ban on alcohol commercials. The beer suddenly appeared out of the blue, without anyone knowing. If it wasn’t for the fact that many Norwegian newspapers rank the Christmas beers, I don’t think anybody would have noticed it. This beer did very well in a lot of the tests.

It pours a clear, dark ruby body under a creamy, but not lasting, beige head. Nice lacings are left as you drink. The aroma is quite strong, with lots of sweetness and dried fruits, some alcohol, port, some cocoa and roasted notes. The flavor is chocolatey at the first sip, and that continues all the way. It is joined by a roasted maltyness, a good sweetness, dried fruits and a not-so-evident bitterness. Towards the end, the bitterness is more pronounced, and there’s also a little alcohol burn that lasts. Full body, quite sticky in the mouth. Conclusion: I agree with the papers ranking this beer high. At least there’s not many Norwegian beers this classy and with that high ABV. I’m glad I bought some bottles to enjoy during the winter time. (071206)

330 ml green bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Intended to be 12% ABV - the brewery had printed labels and all, but the beer stopped at 7.5%! The brewery had to make additional stickers with the new ABV. Very dark reddish brown colour, nearly black. Nice and creamy tan head. Sweetish malty aroma with notes of coffee, leather, liquorice and oak. Very sweet flavour, bordering on "cloying". Roast malts, coffee, oak, liquorice. Some more hops in the finish would have been nice. It will be interesting to see if the brewery can brew a better fermented beer next year, and achieve their 12%.
