12th June 2014
Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Lightly hazy amber beer, good pale cream colour head. Palate is airy and light with fine carbonation. Soft malts. Light floral dried fruits. Mellow bourbon. Light malt cream, trace of toffee - caramel. Light airy finish. Tasty and light but really could have used some dry hopping to bring back some ipa character.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s Pad from an IP trade with a real life Texan - yeee ha ! 12/06/14. Almost clear golden amber with a moderate light beige swirl. Nose is candyfloss, caramel malt, spice, candied orange peel, light tropicana, hoppy pangs. Taste comprises Caramac bar, light hop presence, spice, toffee, candied fruit peels. Medium + body, moderate carbonation, sweet licks in the close with a lightly warming boozey jacket. Ok, not a DIPA for me, not enough hop presence - had this down as an American Strong.

Bottle big thanks to Colin. It pours hazy amber with a small off-white head. The nose is candied orange peel, orange sponge cake, caramel, light vanilla and oak. The taste is crisp, orange peel, some bitterness, candied fruits, sponge cake, sticky fruits and some booze. Fullish body, fine prickly carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Pretty boozy, but fun stuff anyhow.

On tap at the Hay Merchant. It’s an almost clear one, amber in color and with a dense, finger-thick beige head leaving lacings. Caramel, vanilla, a faint booze hint, some dried fruits, pine cones and citrus peel in the aroma. It’s sweet on the palate, with caramel, dried fruits, hints of vanilla, some citrus peel, pine cones and perhaps not enough bitterness A little dark chocolate touch too. Lightly warming, full-bodied and pleasantly carbonated. Sweet and bitter finish. I’m normally not a fan of barrel ageing DIPA’s, but this is really well done. 140515

Location: Draft at Whole Foods - Montrose, 4/1/14, 200th DIPA Rating!

Aroma: The aroma is boozy/bourbon, some heavy malts, and a little hops
Appearance: It pours a dark, almost murky orange, with a decent amout of lace/head
Flavor: The flavor is sweet and bourbony, with plenty of sweet DIPA malts, and a lighter hop feel
Palate: The body is fairly full, it has a pretty nice feel, some stickiness, and a mid-dry finish
Overall Impression: I actually found this one good too. It is a bourbony DIPA with a nice flavor. Sure, it leans sweet, malty, and bourbony for the style, but I enjoyed it. Good stuff.

On tap at Flying Saucer for IPA Day. Pours a cloudy brown with large creamy beige head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is oak, brown sugar, and bourbon. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet bourbon flavor, oak, and light sweet hop. Alcohol present but not overpowering, a very good variation on the original.
Earlier Rating: 1/16/2013 Total Score: 3.5
On tap at Hay Merchant. Pours a cloudy amber with a small frothy off white head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a strong oak and floral hop. Medium mouthfeel with a strong bitter hop and oak with a boozy finish. A good boozier version of the original.
