At Gents Bierfestival. Beer commissioned by one of Aalst’s many clubs linked to their annual Carnaval (funfair) event, which is well-known throughout the country; exists in a stronger tripel version as well. Very thick, lacing, snow white, dense head, misty golden peach blonde colour. Aroma of old cardboard, raw cucumber, camomile, dried apple peel, green pear, bread crust. ’Greenish’ fruity onset, green apple and unripe pear, very sharp overcarbonation even for this style, minerally, grainy pale malt middle with thin bready edges, grassy hop bitterish finish, bit herbal, lightly spicy, cucumber- and green banana-like flavours lingering. Spiced, but it remains unclear to me how; surely they haven’t added actual onion, referring to the name (’ajuin’ being Flemish Dutch for onion and the nickname of the inhabitants of Aalst)? Weird, but quaffable enough.

Thank you for sharing RB Crew! Sampled 750 ml. bottle @ GBF 2017. Hazy orange, huge white head. Nose is dull yeast, sugar, hay, sweet dough. Taste is banana, soap, dull sugar, metallic, cucumber, sugar, candy. Taste is dull sugar, nearing vegetable. Totally uninspiring at best, another blond Belgian. Usually Den Triest is a bit more interesting than this.

19/VIII/17 - 75cl bottle @ Gents Bierfestival - BB: n/a (2017-1300) Thanks to the Belgian ratebeer crew for sharing today's beers and celebrating my 10K!

Little hazy blond to orange beer, creamy irregular beige head, pretty stable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of banana, yeasty, sweet, bit grassy, more yeast, malty, grains. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: citrus, bit sourish, malty, grains, fruity, some banana. Aftertaste: yeasty, bit soapy, little sourish, bit vegetal, sugary touch.

Sampled at Wieze 2017. Pours clear blonde, good white head. Smell is bit yeasty, mild sweetness. malty. Taste is wattery, hollow maltyness. Bit sweet. very gentle. Easy drinker. Bit crisp. OK, low carbo and average MF. Since this is brewed for an Aalst group ( pretty sure they were a carnavalgroup ) this is named after their own nickname - Ajuin ( which means onion) I think it’s a missed opportunity not to use onions in the beer, as long as (judging by tasting this ) you just wanted a beer and didn’t have a specific recipe vor hat you think is the best beer in the world. Just play with it, and have some guts ! Belgium doesn’t need another OK Belgian style blone...
