12oz bottle pours a hazy, burnt orange with some creamy, white head. Nose is kind of trashy, dried orange, malt, toast, cardboard. Flavor is malty, orange, cardboard, a little herbs, some trash. I think it’s just too damn old.

Bottle on 05/23/2011 courtesy of Butters. Clear copper amber body with a medium frothy off-white head. Sweet caramel, fruit, sugar and molasses aroma. Dry fruit, caramel, light yeast character, and light molasses flavor. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation.

Picked this up yesterday in a 12oz bottle at Harpoon Brewery in Windsor VT. Enjoyed at 60 F in a Snifter. Deep brownish amber with 3 finger tan head that fades to 1 finger with very decent lacing. Scent is ultra sweet. Smells just like a barleywine. Some hints of spices and honey. Taste slightly bitter with English and German hop profiles. Also a nice balance of sweetness, bitterness and solid malt backbone. some pineapple and peach tastes and some brown sugar. Medium carbonation, heavy body.

2010 Vintage I tried this fresh and thought it was a bit hot so I held on to a couple of bottles to see how they developed. Pours a deep copper color with a decent off white head that shows moderate retention and lace. Smells of bready caramel and toffee with a bit of earth and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with bready caramel and toffee with a bit of ethanol to cut through the sweetness. Medium body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet sticky mouthfeel. After two years the alcohol is still a bit hot, but that is the only thing providing any balance against a really sweet syrupy maltiness. OK barleywine, definitely a sipper.

Smells like sweetened strawberry shortcake laying out in a flower patch to ferment. Pours without much lacing and some soapy bubbles. Taste of alcohol is strong, barley bitterness present but not overbearing. Some of the caky sweetness in the smell carries through to the aftertaste. Better than some of the mediocre offerings I’ve had from this brewery but it doesn’t go much further than that. Bottle from Lebanon Health Food store, NH.

Didn’t seem very creative, more like an imperial ipa on steroids. Boozy, deep amber, some sweet dark fruit, mostly boost.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear orange-amber color with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of citrus hops, toffee, caramel, brown sugar and toasted malts. The taste is toffee, caramel, citrus, bitter hops and toasted malts. Medium-full bodied. Slightly boozy, low carbonation.

on tap-pours a light tan head that laces and dark amber color. Aroma is medium fruit, citrus/pine. Taste is sweet medium malt-toffee, spice hops, medium/dark fruit-plum, sugary, some licorice. Good effervescence. Opens up nicely as it warms to cellar temperature.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 2/21/11

Aroma: The nose is fairly sweet, some caramel, dark fruits, spice, and a touch of booze
Appearance: It pours a clear mahogany-red color with a small white head and minimal lace
Flavor: The taste is fairly malty, caramel, toffee, ripe fruits, and with a spicy finish
Palate: The mouthfeel is slightly sticky, it has average carbonation, a long duration, and a touch of heat
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty solid Barley Wine. Definitely a more malty example of the style, but still pretty enjoyable. Another solid one from Harpoon's Leviathan series.

12 oz. bottle, pored into snifter. Pours a dark reddish amber in color with a small off white head that produced some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma smells like sweet, white grape. Flavor mirrors the aroma and the booze burn is not so bad. Finishes dry and sweet. All the flavors of a great barleywine are there, but maybe a bit young and I bet this would cellar well. A god one to sip. One of the better barleywines I have sampled.
