Brand new Leste beer, not even mentioned on their website yet (which is clearly in need of an update, as it claims that Doenkere is still the only one officially for sale...). Trendy in the sense that with this new beer, they seek connection with Asian cuisine, see other new Belgian examples like Oude Maalderij’s Farang, or earlier foreign examples like Oedipus’s Thai Thai in the Netherlands. Thick, stable, egg-white, irregular head, lightly hazy peach blonde robe with somewhat salmon pink-like tinge. Aroma of ethereal Asian spices, could be ginseng or ginger, even candied ginger (gari), very perfumey with hints of lavender soap, bath foam, rosewater, candied banana, some bready malts underneath. Sweetish and sourish onset, banana ester, touch of green gooseberries and apple peel, medium carbonation, slick and soapy mouthfeel, bready malt backbone completely buried under this perfumey, sweetish ethereal, soapy spiciness, with still a bitterish touch in the end, bit spicy. Interesting idea, but I am not the greatest fan of adding a lot of spices to beer - I guess being Belgian, I had just too many overcoriandered and otherwise spiced ales - and this one has a whole lot of them, however exotic they may be. Not my beer, but I cannot have anything against the premise, really.
