The Shipyard Ale is a non-traditional, full bodied American Red Ale. The warm coppery orange color, combined with distinctive wheat malt flavors and hoppy characteristics, are sure to please most anyone. Winter Ale is made up of 5 different malts and 5 different hops, creating a complex flavor.

Note: This is also Shipyard Nitro which can be found during the winter months at Federal Jacks Brew Pub

Medium brown head. Opaque black body with dark brown edges. Roasty licorice and coke aroma. Dry licorice, chocolate, and coffee taste with soy notes. Light body. Dry roasty soy and burnt grain aftertaste. It’s OK, I guess. (0.65l bottle, Systembolaget, Charlottenberg.)

Pour is brown with a white head. Aroma is an ok amount of caramel malts. Flavor is a bit of citrus with some malts and a bit of dark fruits. Middle of the road really. nothing outstanding but not real bad either.

Bottle. Copper color with a craem-colored head. Malt, vanilla, and spice aroma. Spicy, malty, oaky flavor. Medium body. Playdough/oak lingering. I’m guessing it’s not oaked, but that’s the flavor I keep getting.

The highlight is the pour. Beautiful copper color with lots of bubbles and a dense two finger head. Aroma is weak and sweet... smells a lot like apple juice. Flavor is improving, but the first couple of sips were very astringent. Acetone highlights with apple juice intermingled and ending in a hops pucker is the first note I jotted. I’m not sure whether it has improved with temperature or with exposure to air, but the malt presence is beginning to control the acetone notes much better and it is more drinkable. Still, the rubbing alcohol is still there in the background, making it tough to fully enjoy this one.

bottle - Pours a nice looking clear copper with a thin to moderate head. The aroma is a light malty scent and a bit of hops. The flavor is of caramel malts, considerable hops that were alright but seemed like they could have been a little better quality, and a bit of alcohol. The mouthfeel was lively and the finish fairly crisp. Overall it’s a pretty solid brew, though not what I think of as a winter brew. It reminded me of a bock for some reason.

Paid $4.99 for a 6-pack. Brownish amber with a large head. Sweet berry in the nose, slightly spiced winterish berry flavor, with a large bitter orange/lemon-rind aftertaste. A decent brew, but not really "big."

2003 bottle. American wheat my ass. This is more like an English Strong. Very malty, lots of fruit but more of a dry sense. Has a big brownish black pour with a good amount of yellow beige head. Big sweet malty smell. Candied sugar?? Very little bitterness, and almost out of balance, but not quite. Has a round, sweet maple/sugar sweet caramle flavor. To think this is in the same class as Oberon. . . .

2003 Bottle (10th Anniversary):
Perfect copper colour with a nice soapy tan/off-white coloured head. Aroma of strong hops, caramel, malt and some light spices. Medium-bodied; Medium strength maltiness added to a slight hoppiness and a very light spiceyness. Aftertaste fades very quickly and leaves just about nothing on the palate. Drying character near the finish, but thats about it. Tastes are minimal for this one, not showing any strong points about it, and definately not showcasing the style at all. I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled it on 07-December-2003.

Shipyard once again disappoints me - amber body, decent head - lightly hoppy aroma - flavor is mostly a combination of hops that just don't seem to work, with a slight fruitiness, which I guess is the "winter" part - bit of toastiness at the end - drinkable, but that's about the best thing I can say about it.
