Beer #5 (of 19) of my 9000th Beer Celebration [9 beers on both sides of #9000th itself] Super crisp and clear deep copper and bronze coloured body with a ruby glow and a thin off-white and tan head. Aroma of crisp malts, figs, pitted fruits, caramelised sugars, toffee, earth, nuts and a good deal of peat with some light alcohol and oaky, cedar notes that hits very nicely in the nose and lasts a long time. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong nutty and very caramely, pitted-fruit sugars come through more than anything else, by far with a ton of alcohol and cedar, oaky and dry woodsie notes with a lot of dry qualities, but a ton of pungency, alcohol, malts, sugars and bitterness here with a lot of flavours coming through, especially on the dry, maltier and oaky side of things that hit nicely and still go down fairly easily, which is of course due to the age of this one. Aftertaste shows a ton of the sugars and rich malty notes that make this strong and deep throughout, but the oaky, cedar and especially pitted fruits make this complex, even considering the age. Overall, a very nice and incredibly pungent, deep, strong, nutty, sweet and of course alcohol-infused beer that hits nicely across the board but ends with a great balance. I sampled this 75 cL corked and caged bottle, purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 26-November-2016 for US$8,27, bottled on 16-September-2016 and sampled on this twentieth year anniversary of the attacks on our country in New York and here at the Pentagon, sampled at my house here, just a few blocks south of the Pentagon, here in Washington on 11-September-2021 for Beer #5 (of 19) of my 9000th beer celebration [9 beers on both sides of #9000th itself].

Bottle courtesy of TheBeerGod at the 8th Richmond Gathering on 06/06/2009. Bottled on Nov 07, 2003. Hazy dark amber body with a medium dense creamy tan head. Somewhat tart molassas and caramel aroma with some fruitiness. Fruity caramel and molassas flavor, some sour notes. Medium light body with high carbonation. Probably a flemish sour by this point.

750 mL bottle shared by TheBeerGod. Bottled 11/7/03. Pours a murky copper brown color with a thin head. Decent retention and lacing. Aroma is toffeeish and lightly tart with currant and berry notes. Taste is significantly more tart with big berry notes, cherries, butter, toffee. Full bodied. Alcohol is barely noticeable.

Bottled Sept 11 02. I picked this one up years ago at New Beer Distributors in Manhattan and it’s been in the back of the fridge. Partly due to the fear that I might have one of the notoriously bad bottles and otherwise waiting for an adventuresome group to assemble that hadn’t had it and was ready for anything in addition. pours clear medium amber body with a full head. Big malty aroma with a touch of sour apple. The flavor is slightly sour, tart apples delivered with a smooth body. Nice. Maybe a few years int he fridge helped this, maybe it was a decent bottling run. In any case, no regrets from me on this one.

Bottled. Copper colour. Vinegary nose. The acidity is cherry like, reminiscent of Rodenbach, but more yeasty and flowery. The mouthfeel is clean, and I’m sure the marked acidity is unintended. Still I kind of enjoy this freaked out beer.

Ruby-amber color, cloudy. Malty aroma, red peppers, salami, magnesia. Some malt, but probably infected… Not very good :-(

An unclear amber beer with a disappearing orange head. The aroma is of hops, coriander, and somewhat sour. The flavor is sour with notes of citrus and overripe fruits. This was a disappointment, I usually love Victory beer, and this is a 10% ABV Belgian Ale - how can it be sour? infection?

AOBF. Draught. Lovely orange/red/purple with some lighter browns in there as well. Slightly hazy with a nice beige head. Aroma of light estery red fruit, brown sugar and pretty straightforward belgian yeast goodness. Flavor is very clean, good solid yeast flavors mix with ripe berries (red raspberries, sour cherries, prunes). Light notes of molasses and lots of brown and candi sugar, but yet it does not get too sweet at all. Lightly astringent; to style and has a good dry finish. Very good, one of the few beers at the festival of which I had seconds. Incredibly excited to rerate with the bottle in my cellar.
Bottled 9/12/2002, drunk 3/14/17
At a mere 15 years of age, I have to give a TON of credit to the brewing prowess of Victory back in the day. This thing has survived in my cellar to be obviously very tired, but showing engaging carbonation of what is left, as well as very low oxidation. Lots of deep fruits (cherry, raisin, plum, apple, strawberry, prune) and expressive, well-attenuated malts. Still has a soft texture and there’s no alcohol to be found. Wish they still made beers like this....

Orangey-amber; aroma of sweet malts, tart raspberries...interesting. Sweet perfumy malts lead the way across the palate, trailed by a sourish wild yeast influence. It works well in this beer at its current levels, but if unchecked could ruin bottles held in the cellar.

Has a great overall appearance, like any yummy, dark red belgian ale. Very nice head that leaves good lacing. There is a bit of spice and citrus in the aroma, but nothing that denotes a very complex beer. The flavor is what it most interesting. For the first second or so, it tastes like a standard belgian, then a wave of citrus flavor overwhelms the tongue, but that, too, drops away after a few seconds, finally ending on a mildly-sweet maltiness that stays on into the finish. At first, I enjoyed the diverse flavor characteristics, but they don't seem to work together to make this a really good brew. It seems more like a beer that can't make up its mind. I do believe, however, that a well-aged bottle will produce a very tasty beer.
