Bottle thanks to Dennis. Pours a cloudy copper with small off white head that lasts. The aroma is leather, oak, rum, spice. Thin body, oak, leather, spice, very sour, dry finish, good.

Bottle shared by 77ships at Hopishop’s B.U.M.B. tasting, cheers! Apparently a rum barrel aged version of Abbaye de St. Bon Chien, the flagship beer of Switzerland’s most acclaimed craft brewery. Moussy, lightly lacing, off-white head over a hazy brownish bronze beer with burgundy hue. Aroma of passion fruit, sherry vinegar, dry wood, vanilla, redcurrant, caramel, crabapple, brown bread, rum indeed but subtle. Estery, fruity onset, gooseberry, brambleberry, cranberry - nicely ’rounded’ tart with a sweet core, initially spritzy carbo calming down in the end and in that sense leading to a more vinous mouthfeel. Red wine vinegar-like sourness increases throughout the palate with drying effect, but never too much, leaving a ’full’, lightly bready and caramelly malt core intact, as it ought to be in an ’oud bruin’ - even if it is a rather ’exotic’ interpretation like this. Finishes in wine-ish drying tartness, warming alcohol, pleasant dryish wood tannins, some earthy yeasty notes and vanilla-like oak accents; the rum flavor is noticeable but remains subtle. Fortunately for me, because I hate rum and have rather disliked rum barrel aged beers in the past because of it; in this case, however, it doesn’t bother me at all and I thoroughly enjoyed this somewhat quirky, barley wine-strength interpretation of the Flemish red style.

375 ml. bottle shared @ HopisHop B.U.M.B. 2016. Dark brown amber, little tanned head. Nose is sweet rum, low tart cherry, thinend out vinegar & lemon sour with some Chirstmas spices rum. Taste is lemon sour, thinned sour with rum, Christmas spices rum, basic faint oak, tanned cherry, sour red berries. Body is lemon sour, far more lemon sour than I am ussed for this beer & far thinner. Nice but the rule remains that the special 1 barrel versions of Saint Bon-Chien aren’t as good as the regular oens. Funny given the price.

Cappped 375 from Bine & Vine. Pours copper with a very slight beige head. Aroma of rum and berry - tending to suggest spicy calvados in rum barrels. Med body or so. Flavor is red berry, oak, some rummishness and it’s just lightly tart/sour. Very good. BFM light in a way.

Dark amber color with hardly head. Very much spiciness, sweet, vanilla, maple. Complex. More dark fruits and more sugar and vanilla than the usual SBC. Prunes, sweet fruitiness, very rich. The sourness is very balanced. Smooth mouthfeel. Amazingly strong barrel. The regular Saint Bon Chien is a bit better in terms of overall balance I think.
