Draught at Beerlovers Bar in Antwerp. Thick and ’membranous’ lacing, frothy, egg-white, dense head over a hazy orange blonde beer with slight peachy hue. Aroma breathes New World IPA in a way I did not expect, considering the ’IPA’ I had from these guys last week: ripe mango, passion fruit, tangerine, cucumber, breakfast cereals, pink grapefruit, moist marihuana, biscuit, even stale urine (as in: dank hops). Vividly fruity but ’clean’ onset, lots of passion fruit, mango juice and ripe gooseberry, beautifully sweetish and sourish (redcurrant), sweet ripe orange apparent from the start, building a bridge to the finish over an underlying, medium carbonated structure of smooth, sweetish biscuity maltiness towards an elegantly bittering, mildly grapefruity and very orangey hop finish with weedy and even slight piney and hayish notes, but nevertheless ending juicy. As disappointing as that local ’Weyninckhoven’ IPA from a bottle may have been, this is a stunning surprise. I have the impression this brewery performs considerably better on tap than from bottle, nothing wrong with that, but I did not expect such a contrast between their highs and their lows. This is very clearly their greatest high so far, at least from what I am able to judge. Beautiful and decidely un-Belgian, there are not many IPAs - or, in this case, DIPAs - of this stature in our modest country. Pun intended.

Sampled draft @ Modeste 2016. Deep orange amber, creamy off-white head. Nose is mellow lightly cheesy hops, green vegetable hops, mellow, creamy light caramel & toffee. Body is lightly soapy, bit cheesy hops quite a malty base with nice toffee, caramel, sugar, malt base is pretty good even if a bit too heavy for the style. Lightly yeasty body with big malts but nowhere even near as yeasty as some of their beers in the past. Nice step up from some of their work in the past.
