Bottled at Ottawa gathering. Dark brown, small head. Husky licorice aroma. Mid dry with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Husky licorice and coffee. Bitter finish. Don’t get the bourbon.

A dark brown Schwartz bier with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet chocolate malt with light grassy hops, light mineral notes, fruity esters, nice. In mouth, a nice coffee chocolate malt with light bourbon barrel notes, nice and smooth. Bottle at Per’s Almost gone tasting, March 2017.

Despite it being bourbon barrel aged, I opted for my lager glass considering the style.
The appearance was the black color of their \"Black,\" obviously with a two finger’s worth of white to off white foamy head that quickly dissipated. Lacing is semi-sticky but thin.
The aroma has some schwarzbier qualities allowing some more chocolate and coffee coming across. German lager yeastiness seems a bit lost. Bourbon is there, but extremely faint.
The flavor leans to the sweet side and once again, the expected German yeastiness does get lost a little bit. Light bourbon sweetness along with some coffee and chocolate. Dry roasty coffee and chocolate aftertaste. Rugged dry finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body with a fair sessionability about it. Low carbonation. Semi-smooth with a moderate chewiness.
Overall, still wants to show the schwarzbier qualities but also not allowing the German yeast to show it’s worth in the aroma or flavor. Bourbon is a bit lacking.
