Our winter strong ale has a gorgeous mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnut, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. No spices, just a perfect blend of five specialty malts.

Amber colour with a tan head. Malty and nutty aroma with hints of dark fruits. Warming malty flavor with caramel, bread, toffee and some dark fruits too. Very nice warming malty aftertaste.

Pretty reddish brown, with pretty nice beige head. Aromas are a little weak... of scotch ale-type malt with lightly detectable hops. Flavor is pleasant, but not outstanding. Very nice balance and mouthfeel which are the two strongest aspects.

Bottle. Clear reddish-mahogony beer with a small tan head. Roasty/caramel malt aroma. Rich caramel flavor with roasty/coffee notes. Some hop bitterness at end. Fuller bodied.

This starts with a large tan head over a sparkling clear, deep garnet body. doughy chocolate covered cherry aroma. Well balanced flavor, moderately sweet with a nice bitterness at the finish. No alcohol in the flavor. Not too bad overall, I’d have another one.

Pour is a deep red with a small white head. Aroma is a nice mix of dark malts and oily hops. Flavor is a bitter mix of malts and hops. Kind of gives it a bit of a earthy flavor as it rolls over the tounge. Pretty decent and worth seeking out.

on tap-pours a minimal white head. Color is deep amber. Aroma is grain. Taste is grain, sweet, coffee/chocolate/toasty. An occasional beer for me. Again, this is a Big Beer with that complex, thick taste.

Paid $1.70 for a 12-oz single. Appearance is deep rubious red with a large tannish head. Aroma is very pleasant: toffee, caramel, floral bouquet. VERY falvorful, and creamy. I normally like the addition of spice to beers, but with this one, I especially enjoy the smooth, unaltered flavor.

This is a most impressive rendition of an ESA - deep, dark amber hue with off-white lacing - yeasty aroma, with spciy notes, plums, figs and christmas cookies - strikes the balance between roasty and sweet qualities that all the great ESAs do - full-bodied, quite chewy - toffee, caramel and a slight nuttiness - bready malts and dark fruit - peppery and spicy near the end, finishing with some nutmeg and a touch of chocolate - I’m going to get plenty more of this stuff for the long, north-east winter.

Cola coloured body with a nice thinnish off-white coloured head. Aroma of caramel, light english hops and some strong nuttiness. Medium to Light-bodied; Strong maltiness up front with some sweetness shortly following. No spices to mention, more of a mellow sweetness and toasty malt flavour. Aftertaste shows some metal and a light bitterness. Overall, a decent winter seasonal-no spices, but good with burnt sugars and english hops. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased by jon[r888710] at Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Washington, D.C. on 14-November-2004, with jon. Thanks for the beer :-)

This was a challenge to interpret. Poured clear deep red-brown with a thin off-white head. Berries, dark fruit, and citric hops in the aroma. Flavor was a blend of traditional English Strong Ale flavors (sweet caramel, dark fruit, wood, and berries) with strong American hops that lent a bitter (grapefruit rind), piney character I've not detected in other examples of this style. Medium-thin bodied but full-flavored. A nice winter seasonal without the tired ginger-nutmeg-cinnamon theme.
