Sampled from a 750 ml corked brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with red highlights and a medium sized beige head that left minimal lacing. The aroma was sweet, toasty and malty with caramel and red wine. The flavor was red wine, soy sauce, caramel, toasty malts berry. Long finish. Medium body. Interesting.

Bottle at Elizabeth Station, Bellingham, WA
Hazy amber color. The aroma is a bit vinous, the flavor is malty, sweet, with enough depth, and red wine barrel aging, woody final. Warming alcohol. Nice

It’s a pretty decent beer but its primary character of being a scotch Ale is lost with the fruitiness of the wine.

4800th review! 750 ml bottle into snifter, best before 7/28/2020. Pours slightly hazy dark ruby red/light brown color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, blackberry, apricot, apple, red wine, oak, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, brown bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of chocolate, cinnamon, pepper, clove, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity yeast, wine barrel, and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, blackberry, apricot, apple, red wine, oak, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, brown bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of chocolate, cinnamon, pepper, clove, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light earthy bitterness and tart/tannic oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruits, blackberry, apricot, red wine, oak, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, brown bread, nuttiness, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, wine barrel, and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt and tart/tannic oak balance, with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Slight dryness from tart/tannic barrel notes as well. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy, lightly acidic/tannic, and slightly grainy/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.5%. Overall this is an outstanding barrel aged scotch ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, wine barrel, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the big ABV. Great wine barrel presence without being overwhelming; and a spot on base beer with the malt and yeast complexity. A highly enjoyable offering.
