From tap at Tap House, Kraków. Aroma is wheaty with smoked malt, smoked cheese, herbal and sweaty notes. Flavour is moderate sweet. Light bodied, watery. Interesting, appears an authentic old world style beer. Not a complete success for me though, bit too weak to the palate.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours a hazy, grayish yellow with a tiny, white head. Has a vague, greasy smoke aroma. Thin body, very watery, a slight tartness andagain this greasy, smoky note. But extremely watery with hardly any trace of malts. Ends dry with a little hop presence. 260617

At LIBF. A traditional Grodziskie (or Grätzer), the ancient style of smoked wheat beer that originated in what is now Poland and gained a lot of popularity there in bygone times, but died out, only to be revived by the craft beer revolution - not in the least its Polish division, which has risen to great heights in a relatively short amount of time. Egg-white, thickly moussy but slowly opening head, hazy straw blonde robe with ochre-ish tinge. Aroma is indeed classic Grodziskie - I only had a few Polish examples so far but their typical nose stays with me forever - with notes of smoked sausage, smoked olives, soggy white bread, soapy wheat and a whole lot of it (unsurprising of course - this beer, like other classic Grodziskies, is 100% malted wheat), green bell pepper hint, spicy dried flowers, smoked lemons. Fruity onset, apple and unripe pear with a lemon peel touch from the start but softly so, medium carbo, extremely soapy wheat body, very slick, umami-flavoured smoky ending, smoked fruits and even sausage, countering the soapiness with a pleasant spiciness; a vaguely sourish, wheat-induced lemon zest flavour lingers afterwards. This is not an easy style to master - mostly because really good and purely ’traditional’ examples are far from widespread even within Poland - but this is as classic as it gets and a very well-made example of this elusive yet fascinating, centuries old European wheat beer style.

330 ml. bottle sampled @ LIBF 2017. Thank you for sharing RB-InBev Belgian crew! Weirdly pale golden, little white head. Nose is massive smoked wheat, hugely intense, got that weird Grodziskie smoke going on. Taste is massive on same Grodziskie smoked wheat profile, little else, back is mineral, vaguely lemon. Lacks body, bit mineral, rather watery actually. Lacks body, classical but I a lot of these traditional Grodziskie to be rather weird, this is another one. Plus its watery & mineral.
