Barleywine-Style Ale Aged in Bourbon Barrels with Vanilla Added
Mash & Vanilla is an ode to a classic from The Bruery. A bourbon barrel-aged barleywine-style base provides a well-matured, oaky and sweet bourbon foundation, while the addition of vanilla beans brings prominent and savory vanilla sensation to the forefront of your palate with every sip. Enjoy fresh for the most full-bodied vanilla character.

750 ml. bottle obtained in a trade with AdamChandler. 2016 Edition. Served into an AleBrowar plastic shaker. Dark amber, light brown hue, small solid tanned head. Nose is more bourbon than you can shake a stick at with big molasses, caramel, toffee, near alcoholic, dark fruit & some oxidation, no vanilla. Taste is a classical bourbon, low to medium oxidization in a good way caramel, figs, raisin, bit boozy, BE dark fruits, sugar, classical strong USA Strong Ale, fructose, agave syrup, oxidized, some oak, zero vanilla, caramel sugar finish. Near lively carbonation, body is far less thick than I would expect. Very solid classical Bruery brew, more American Strong Ale than Barley Wine (if there were ever a pointless discussion). Very solid brew for people who are Bruery enthusiasts like me but it is sad that you get zero vanilla here.

Aroma’s an odd one; good, rich, but? Flavor’s like nose, but more intense. Weird to have the sweet vanilla paired with a barleywine. Good but weird.

Tasting at Matt’s
Dark brown color, generous beige head. Aroma of almonds, donuts, vanilla, cake frosting, alcohol. Full bodied, cookie dough, chocolate chips, vanilla, light liquorice, bourbon, alcohol; a bit cacophonous, but it works; very good although no elegance to be found here.

Light brown, A bit of haze. Thin head. On the nose, lots of bourbon, and there’s quite a bit of sweetness. Thick, rich, with a lot of vanilla. Quite rich, cardiac, and the thing is, I like it.

750mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma brings out loads of vanilla beans upfront, followed by heavy bourbon barrels and loads of caramel. Flavour is along the same lines, with heavy vanilla beans, bourbon barrels and caramel. Sweet, but not cloying. Finishes on notes of vanilla and bourbon. Excellent.

Sampled from the tap at ABR 2016. Pours a near clear deep amber with a yellowish tan head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a good amount of vanilla and sweet grains with toffee supporting. Flavor has lots of toffee and vanilla supported by booze, sweet grains and bourbon.

It’s big it’s boozy it’s what I expected from The Bruey. Vanilla and bourbon are everywhere, sweet full body, amazing well hidden abv. Another over the top great beer but unfortunately/fortunately it’s exactly what I expected and could have rated this beer from the label alone. Good but can’t say I get excited
