33cl bottle, merci à Tderoeck, BB 07/07/2020. Bottled 07/04/2020.

Cloudy blond appearance with lasting head. Aroma and flavour have muted tropical fruits. Plenty of malt body. Good balance.

26 April 2018. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Sample 5/6. Shared with Anke. Pours hazy pale yellow with a stable frothy white head. Aroma of lemongrass, lemon zest, yellow grapefruit, peach, papaya, yoghurt, carambola. Taste is medium fruity sweet, quite tropical, peach & carambola on a bready-yoghurty malty base, lemony & zesty sourness, hoppy bitter tones of grapefruit & orange peel, more floral hoppy in the dryish finish, with lingering sweetish yellow fruit & dough. Medium body, slick/fluffy texture, fizzy carbonation. Spot-on, aromatic and tasty, well done. (Edited 1/6/19)

Brouwbar’s latest, an attempt at the hippest beer style of the moment, tasted first from a bottle (thanks to Benjamin, the brewer, for sharing) and yesterday from tap (thanks Trevor). Moussy, snow white, lightly lacing head, opening in the middle; hazy egg yolk yellow blonde beer with pale khaki tinge. Surprisingly convincing, tropical, strong aroma of ripe mango, papaja, sweet onions, orange juice, pineapple, white bread dough, green banana, soap, some armpit sweat dankness. Sweetish onset, loaded with mango, starfruit and pineapple with a lime-like sourish edge, soft carb, creamy and fluffy (if somewhat thinnish) mouthfeel, soft doughy malt soil under a very aromatic, tropical hop finish, mango-, passionfruit- and a bit sweet onion-like, with some chalky and otherwise minerally side notes. Not many attempts at this hype have been made in Belgium so far and only BBP (in collaboration with Weird Beard) and Totem (in collaboration with LOC but actually brewed in the Netherlands) have been really successful at it so far – this is the third one. Brouwbar has surprised me before with their decidedly non-Belgian, clean and technically well-executed beers, but this one is perhaps even more reason to be proud than the others. If this NEIPA hype continues, I guess a few others in Belgium may come up with decent examples sooner or later, but this one ticks all the boxes if you’re into this style – a welcome alternative for having to buy or trade the highly sought after Trillium, Tree House or Cloudwater offerings in this style. Congratulations to Benjamin and Jolien!
