Préaris Nelson's Session Ale

Andy Dewilde's take at the now ubiquitous session IPA style, dry hopped with Nelson Sauvin, hence the name. Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Thick and frothy, egg-white, tightly 'paper' lacing, very stable, dense head over an initially clear, warm 'old gold' coloured beer with even warmer orange hue. Aroma of old red apples, Cantaloupe melon, sweet red onions, ripe apricot, lime peel, papaja, white bread dough, orange zest and even some orange water somewhere, lychee, old cloves, chewing gum, sweat, honey, dried camomile flowers, ginger powder, bread crust, white pepper, dry cigarette tobacco. Crisp, fruity onset, estery, hints of banana, melon and a lot of peach, sweet with a souring edge, some pear and perhaps papaja, quite sharp carbonation with notably minerally effects, effectively numbing the fruitiness a bit. Rounded mouthfeel, softly 'white' bready and lightly nutty maltiness, fruitiness lingering, some spicy, clove-ish phenols here and there, evolving into a quenching, drying end with an adequate amount of aromatic hoppiness, a bit tropical but restrainedly so - to the extent that I would probably never have been able to identify the Nelson Sauvin; ends with a sweaty note, as well as ripe papaja, wrinkled red apples and old orange zest accents retronasally, in any case well-perfumed in terms of hoppiness, with a long, gentle but effective, bit resiny and grapefruity hop bitterness settling onto the root of the tongue, yet remaining 'friendly' enough to let quite a lot of that sweetish malty juiciness to pass through, accompanied by very minerally side notes. Old orange peel and sweet red onion accents linger along with this as the beer goes down. Clean, as most of Andy's recent beers tend to be, with a cleverly positioned hop character to it, drying, spicy and quenching, though clearly suffering a bit from 'Belgian yeast interference' - in other words, just a tad too phenolic to achieve greatness. Enjoyable enough though, if only beers of this style, resolution and drinkability were the standard in Belgium, instead of those countless banana ester- and coriander-ridden blondes that now almost completely fill up this particular niche.

Bottle 330ml. @ home. [ As Préaris Nelson’s Session Ale ].Clear medium orange yellow colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, moderate hoppy, citrus, fruity hops, light grass - leather, light yeasty, fruity yeast, light leather - grass. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a long duration, light yeasty, light funky grassy hops, fruity hops, grass, pale malt, dry. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. Pours rather clear, yet bit hazy blonde. Good white head. Smell is fresh,crisp malts, nice hoppyness, both bitter and aromatic. Taste is sharp bitter. Intense ! Bitter over the whole pallet. Some aroma, not much but enough. Bit crisp maltyness, especially towards and in the aftertaste. Nice

330 ml. bottle @ Gollem. BBF 17.10.2017. Lightly hazy orange, big creamy white head. Nose is murky wet burlap sack sweet malty, overly sugary, thick musty grains, bit dirty. Taste is overly sweet, far too grainy, malty, sugar, unpleasant thick grainy body & taste, thick wet burlap sack, bread, sugar, grain, bit fizzy, lacks hop quality & hard to drink despite the Session moniker, I struggled with this one. Sorry this one is not for me.

Clear orange beer, hue solid creamy meringue like white head, very stable, growing even in the glass, after pouring. Aroma: very malty, grains, some caramel, bit herbal, fruity notes on warming up. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: very bitter, some citrus, grapefruit touch, bit grassy, metallic bitterness. Aftertaste: bit resinous, very bitter, some grapefruit, medicinal touch, more tropical fruits. Nice one!
