28 April 2018, at Zythos Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke.
Hazy red/amber with a thin, frothy, bubbly, off-white head. Aroma of strawberry, grapefruit, biscuity malt, red berries, smoke, even coffee powder. It tastes medium fruity sweet, malt & dough in the back, and light to medium hoppy bitter. Dry, long, hoppy, grapefruit-like finish, a tad yeasty. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. A welcome & well-made variation.

At Modeste in Antwerp. "Red IPA" - still a very rare and anecdotic thing in Belgium - but from a deliberately modern 'Americanized' craft brewery so curious to try this. Tightly 'papery' lacing, moussy, stable, pale greyish beige head, hazy bronze-ish amber colour (rather than a deep coppery red actually, but ok). Aroma of dried apricots, toasted peanuts, tea leaves, dried orange peel, soap, pine needles, walnut peel. Dried fruitiness in the mouth, very subdued in sweetness, notably nutty from the start, toasty, bit disfigured by overly sharp and numbing carbonation; ends with a very outspoken, 'roughly' piney, peppery and grapefruity, long and thorough hop bitterness, through which the nuttiness persists. Bitter, nutty, dry and resiny, could perhaps be embellished by more 'new' hop aroma and clearly overcarbonated certainly for this style - but I applaud the fact that this small brewing enterprise uncompromisingly opts for this kind of beers rather than regurgitating old Belgian clichés, like too many other starters in this country do.

Bottle sample @ Vini Birre Ribelli ’16. Trouble brune, col fin blanc.

at vbr. Pours rather unclear dark amber. Good white head. Smell is a bit weak. Taste is crispy, cornflakes pop in mind. Aftertaste is pure and intense roasty peanuts. Once you taste it, you taste only these peanuts ! this is really interesting, and nice! I quite love this beer, even if only for the aftertaste. Not an IPA though (to me )
