New and very limitedly produced cherry beer from Paenhuys near Sint-Niklaas, tasted in "avant-première" in Beveren-Waas, at a slightly higher ABV than it has now. Medium thick, stable, lightly lacing head over a more or less clear, salmon pinkish amber coloured beer with fierce sparkling - looks almost like a rosé champagne. Aroma of fresh (sweet) cherries and raspberries, rosé wine, biscuit, acacia honey, soap, flowers. Sweet onset but strangely a bit more raspberry- than cherry-like with a sourish accent, white sugar sweetness added but not in a cloying way, light and pleasant mouthfeel, fizzy with an undertone of caramelly malts, leading to a finish that continues the pure and fresh, sweet fruit taste but also adds a subtle yet unmistakable, earthy, grassy hop bitterishness, which to my taste does not clash with the fruit character at all. Fruit beers in Belgium have been overly sweet and sticky for decades, and although this certainly has the classic ’kriek sweetness’, it is only there to a limited extent and paired with a hop bitterish finish, which lends it depth and ’color’. In that sense: a pleasant and interesting addition to the Belgian cherry beer world, and doubtlessly a perfect apéritif, as an alternative for sweet sparkling wines. I am curious about the updated version, which will be launched at Zythos Beer Festival next week...
