De Joehoe (6,5%) is een blond, fris lentebier dat perfect past bij dat eerste lentezonnetje. De mix van gerst, tarwe, haver en frisse hoppen schreeuwt om gedronken te worden. Joehoe, doe mij er één!

330ml bottle. Hazy, orange, dark golden to amber colour with average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Weak, yeasty fruity and grassy hoppy aroma, some orchard fruit, a touch of fresh hay. Taste is rather neutral, pale malty, slightly grassy hoppy and yeasy fruity, hints of fresh hay, a touch of orchard fruit. Creamy texture, smooth and soft, somehow full palate, very fine, soft carbonation. Well crafted, not bock-ish in any way, a bit cautious - nice.

Fles thuis geprobeerd met LiekevdV. Het is een troebel goudgeel bier met een volle witte schuimkraag. Het heeft een moutige wat gistachtige en fruitige geur. De smaak is moutig en zacht hoppig.

Bottle 33cl. from Boerenjongens grocery @home poured into a footed pilsner glass. Hazy pale amber colour, fair frothy off-white head, slowly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma sweet malts, orange, lemonade, light honey, grassy hops. Fruity taste, medium sweet and light bitter, malty, orange, lemon peel. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, more bitterness in the dry juicy sweetbitter aftertaste, light mineral and husky notes, slightly peppery on the tongue, easy to drink, refreshing, very nice.

0.33 l bottle from 'drankgigant.de', bottled in February 2020. Hazy, golden amber with a thin, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, slightly malty, gently fruity-floral and slightly grassy aroma of lemon peel, some honey and a touch of grass. Gently sweet, moderately bitter, quite floral-grassy and slightly fruity taste of honey, lemon peel and some grass, followed by a short, gently bitter, quite grassy and minimally yeasty finish. Medium body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Really pleasant and refreshing beer, nicely hoppy.

With Holland being in spring Bock mood, a tradition dating back to the late twentieth century that runs parallel with the German Maibocks, it seems logical to compare a few - only to find that they, too, have apparently diverged into a whole range of flavours meanwhile (since the new Dutch craft beer boom), just like the Dutch autumn Bocks have. This is Bird's contribution to this, in all, relatively young tradition, with the name of the beer being a play on the Dutch name for the eagle-owl. Medium thick and quickly breaking, off-white, mousy, irregularly lacing, opening and eventually all but disappearing head on a cloudy apricot blonde beer with beige hue. Aroma of honey, white bread, freshly cut sweet apples, pear juice, hints of pineapple, industrial sweet cider, pumice, homemade lemonade, dried bitter weeds. Sweet onset, fruity side notes reminiscent of sweet apple, ripe pear, pineapple and perhaps a dash of banana, medium carbonated, with a slight sourish edge (orange-like) and supple, slender mouthfeel. Minerally accents and ongoing sweet 'yellow' fruitiness accompany a slick pale malt sweetness with a layer of honeyish residual sugar on top, but the sweetness does get counterbalanced in the very end, when a floral, slightly peppery and medium long hop bitterness comes in, even offering a brief whiff of orange juice or mandarin retronasally. Very easily drinkable, uncomplicated and sweet, like any more 'traditional' Dutch lentebok; the hops do act out a tad more bitterness than would be the case in the more established and mass-marketed examples by larger breweries, which is a plus in my book. Otherwise a textbook example of the style, albeit in a noticeably 'artisanal' way. No complaints here, as usual with Bird's beers.
