Blue Monk Special Reserve is a quadruple which has been aged for 3 years in red wine barrels from Château Haut Breton Larigaudière in Margaux! It is dark brown in color with a beige frothy head. It has an aroma and bouquet of a complex red wine, with a soft taste of spice, berries and black cherries. The flavour is enriched with touches of caramel, fine chocolate, toasted nuts and soft hints of smoke. The fruity elements of red and dark fruits comes from the aging in barrels fine from Château Haut Breton Larigaudière in Margaux. These flavors are adding a slight vanilla note and some refined wood tannins.

De Struise aime bien ces derniers temps nous mettre un peu d'acidité dans leurs bières. Sur une base qui s'apparente à un Imperial Stout, cela ne s'y prête guère à mon sens et gâche ici la force et profondeur s'une base qui serait sans cela de bonne facture. L'acidité n'étant pas trop complètement dominante les arômes torréfiés et l'alcool (à9,5 %) continuent à exister. De léger arômes fumés, très bien dosés se font également ressentir. Bref, vous me faîtes la même sans acidité, et ce serait excellent. Le visuel est sur un brun foncé quasi noir (EBC de 84) sas mousse. Le nez est sur le café, chocolat, un léger fumé et un soupçon de prune, on ne s'attend alors pas à l'acidité qui vient quelque peu gâcher l'ensemble. Sur l'attaque nous avons un petit côté vineux, avec en complément café, chocolat et de légères épices. Mais c'est surtout à partir de la seconde bouche que l'acidité prend son essor avec un côté astringent. On perd alors en arôme. L'ensemble s'équilibre mais avec un l’alcool qui peine un peu. Ce n'est que sur le final que la base et l'alcool s'expriment le plus avec un léger fumé très bien intégré qui arrive. Pas fan.

Bottle: Nose is red wine, almonds, soft smoke, crisps, faintly meaty, raspberry, touch of balsamic, spice, blackberry, a little bourbon. Taste is very rich red wine, leading to full cherries, a lovely deep but subtle smoke that blends beautifully with the red wine. Hints of strawberry liqueur, raspberry, smoked cheese, touch of meat, faint cola, very light chocolate which emerges as it breaths. I absolutely love this beer, it's the perfect medley of flavours for me. It's that wonderfully rare beer, where one feels like it's been brewed to your personal tastes. It feels like the magic of vintage struise.

Bottle from Wine Reserve, Cobham. Rich chocolate malt aroma, nuttiness, with a boozy streak. Smokiness. Dark brown. Inky. Creamy beige head. Sour with an underlying bitterness. Dark berries. Quite tart. A vinous note. Develops a doughy nuttiness, albeit the sourness remains prominent throughout. Alcohol sting. A hint of sugaryness into the finish. Medium bodied. Creamy. Flat carbonation, low level life signs. Astringent finish. Dry. Easy drinking yet noticeably boozy.

Flaska från Etre Gourmete. Klar, riktigt mörkbrun vätska med lågt skum. Söt med massor av torkad frkut, fint smakdjup men kanske inte så mycket komplexitet. Skulle gärna sett lite mer fatkarktär. Mörk söt malt som nog behöver lagras några år för att peaka. Men med det sagt maffigt och gott i Struises paradgren.

Fles 33cl thuis. Cacao, donker fruit, zoetje, licht vineus, caramel, wat roasted malts, chocoladetoets, lichte rooktoets, licht droog, bitters. Klein beetje dun. (10-5-2020).
