Our Pineapple Sculpin IPA came from one of many small-batch cask experiments to enhance the flavor of our signature IPA. With so many tropical hop notes in Sculpin, how could we not try adding some sweet, juicy pineapple? The combination of fruity flavors and hop intensity definitely packs a punch.

Bottle from Perry’s. It pours a clear golden color with a frothy off white head. The aroma has some pineapple, but not very strong. There’s some other hop related fruitiness like mango and grapefruit with some lightly toasted malt. The flavor has spicy hops, a little toast and caramel. Background notes of pineapple and grapefruit. Very strong spicy, piney bitterness. Dry. Pretty nice actually. The pineapple could probably be a bit stronger and the bitterness should be lower to let the fruit shine, but still a nice beer.

Draught at the Salty Pig, 2/6/16.
Light chill haze in this peachy-apricot-bronze colored beer with moderate carbonation creating a medium-sized white head that shows average retention.
Not much pineapple in the nose, which is probably a good thing, but yet with tons of peach, nectarine, leafy/resinous hops and a good dose of sweet pale malts. Pretty standard sculpin nose, so far removed from when this beer used to be stunningly good. Just a lot of mushy apricot/nectarine and underattenuated, sluggish maltiness now, with light pine and monotonous citrus.
The pineapple, at least, isn’t overdone, but doesn’t come off incredibly authentic, with some sharp edges and a also some tangy-sweet, lightly artificial qualities to it. Overly sweet malts, featuring bread dough, honey and light caramel, with punchy, lightly resinous/sharp hop character. Pine and white grapefruit sit heavily on the finish, as well as sugar. Yawn.

Bottle, Wine Warehouse. Pours golden with a tiny white head. Smells citrusy, some pineapple notes without a doubt. Taste is fine, but not heavy on the pineapple. Its almost as if the pineapple is an afterthought. I had higher expectations. Almost as if someone dropped a pineapple candy into a pitcher of IPA and poured me a little.

Pours deep gold into a shaker. Soapy bright white head with little retention recedes leaving soapy lacing. Sweet pineapple aromas. Soft and full with dark caramel upfront turning to fruity pineapple and mango before the lasting resin finish.

Tap at Harry’s Hofbrau in redwood city. Like the grapefruit, I really feel like the adjunct takes a very good beer and notches it down a bit. Pineapple mutes many if the other flavors and aromas, but it still restrained as well.

Pours a clear golden yellow, with lots of effervescence and a good-sized head. Strong pineapple aroma, along with some grass, citrus, hops. Flavor is marked by a strong bitterness, with lots of hop bite in the forefront. The pineapple really doesn’t come through all that much in the flavor, it’s there a bit in the finish and the aftertaste. Tastes like regular Sculpin pushed to be just a touch more bitter and hoppy than usual. Very good, though.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours bright gold with a foamy white head. Pineapple aroma wafts through the room! Aroma from the glass is a bit more complex - seems to have hop, but the pineapple obscures it somewhat. Med + body. Flavor is earthy/citrus with decent pineapple notes - or maybe essays rather than notes. It’s really camp - to revert to the dim past. It also tastes good. I could drink more than one.

This was poured into a becher pint glass.
The appearance was an extremely transparent golden color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated immediately. Speckled light lacing clings all around the glass in a messy fashion.
The smell had all of the attributes of regular Sculpin with the added pineapple and apricots. Light mango underneath.
The taste was basically the same with a dry aftertaste. Dry pineapple / apricot aftertaste. Quick dry finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly light and somewhat smooth.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good beer that I would have again. Preferably in the Summer.
