Smoked Imperial Stout brewed with smoked malt, molasses and brown sugar, aged in oak bourbon barrels. Somber and smoky, BARFLY saunters into the room slowly. Thick smoke. Cool swagger. Good wood. Too much brass. Sticky leather. Slow glances. Lingering looks. A bit of sass. The only thing that didn’t make the glass was maraschino cherry. Bring your own and wear out your welcome. Part of the 2010 Pop Ten Series. December 2010.

Bottle courtesy of SHIG, thank you sir! Pours jet black, admits no light, dark brown head that settles to an edge. Aroma of vanilla, burnt licorice, stewed prunes. Taste is fruity espresso, vanilla, dark fruit, booze. This is a big one. Tasty.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small brown head. Aroma brings out complex molasses, bourbon, vanilla and wood - not a whole lot of smoke. Flavour is rich as fuck, with loads of bourbon, vanilla and molasses, followed by a touch of smoked malt. Modest sweetness on the finish. Viscous as fuck, with a huge bourbon and vanilla finish. Excellent extreme beer.

Bottle thanks to Shig. Shared by me at Phresh’s birthday tasting. Pours oily black. Tan head. Nose/taste of fudge cake, molasses, bourbon, vanilla and oak. Motor oil thick but still not overwhelming. Delicious beer.

2014 vintage clocking in at 11.6%. Aroma is very rich with lots of dark chocolate, some molasses and roast and a nice moderate smokiness. Smoke has a bit of a peat character to it but also some hard wood. Moderate bourbon character with some light oak notes. Some light notes of dark fruit, especially prune and plum. Pours a motor oil black with a small, moderately thick, dark mocha head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges. Light lacing with sheets of alcohol turning to long legs. Flavor has a moderate sweetness to it with a lot of chocolate and molasses. Medium roast notes with some tobacco and leather. Moderate smoke notes with more peat than hard wood, but some hard wood is present. Light dark fruit notes of plum, raisin and prune. Medium light bourbon notes with light alcohol spice and faint oak notes. Mouthfeel is full bodied and oily with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a really nice, big, rich stout. When cold the roast was a bit rough, but as it warmed it blended really well and became an amazing beer. Lots of chocolate and roast notes with some complimentary bourbon notes.

6oz draft at Brouwers. Rebrew, needs to be unretired. Super black with brown head. All autolysis nose, sopping roast, not as boozy as expected. Lots if autolysis in flavor with some mineral roast, low acidity, chalky bakers chocolate. Despite all that its way better and easier than similar soy sauce brews.

Taste is sweet, bitter, salty and metallic with heavily roasted malts, burnt wood, peat, vanilla fudge, sheet metal, prunes, salty liquorice, raisins, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, burnt cookies, alcohol, roasted nuts, roasted cookies and hints of moist wood and moist soil. Mouthfeel is slightly round, rough, slightly boozy, tiny astringent and full bodied.
