Smoked Imperial Stout brewed with smoked malt, molasses and brown sugar, aged in oak bourbon barrels. Somber and smoky, BARFLY saunters into the room slowly. Thick smoke. Cool swagger. Good wood. Too much brass. Sticky leather. Slow glances. Lingering looks. A bit of sass. The only thing that didn’t make the glass was maraschino cherry. Bring your own and wear out your welcome. Part of the 2010 Pop Ten Series. December 2010.

Black. The smoke is there in the aroma, and some smoked meat in the flavor, but also with bourbon. I might have liked this more without the bourbon.

22oz bottle from Superstar Beverage in Huntington. Pours a very thick, viscous black with some creamy, off white head. Nose has a ton of black licorice and molasses, hugely sweet, malt too, some mild smoke, some umami notes, plenty of booze too. Flavor follows right along, very thick, burnt caramel, molasses, liquid licorice, some anise, some smoke, pencil lead. Full bodied, thick, boozy finish.

Bottle share at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to our host. Opaque dark brown beer, small tan head. Palate is airy with very mild carbonation. Dense and slightly savoury dark malts. Little malt cream. Raisin and prune fruits. Savoury finish, not too much smoke. Very rich and tasty.

Bottle shared by Jeff, thanks! Pours black with a dark chocolate brown head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has lots of bitter dark chocolate supported by graham cracker, roasted malts and a bit of smoke. Flavor combines bitter chocolate and sweet dark grains with a supporting smokiness and roasted malts.

Bottle. Opaque black liquid with small tan head. Aroma of dried fruit, light smoke, light umami, leather, tomato puree, light coffee and sausage. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with notes of dried fruit, licorice, sausage and leather. Full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Pretty good but savory.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Bruce. Pours oily black with a slight, frothy tan head. Lots of well roasted dark malts in the nose, dark fruits. Medium sweet flavor with very subtle smoked malts, burnt earth, touches of peat, sugary dark fruits. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Modest warmth on the finish, more dark cocoa, dark fruits, some leather, a bit of earthy bitterness. Not bad.

Bottle thanks to Bruce. It pours jet black with thin a tiny tan head. The nose is rich roast, burnt toffee, charred wood, vanilla, treacle, dried fruits, smoke, earth and salted caramel. The taste is bitter, hard roast, umami, mild smoke, coffee, earth, warming alcohol, pepper, chewy malt and light berry with a dry, roasty finish. Full body and fine carbonation. Pretty solid gear.

Keg at APEX, PDX, 09/11/14. Pitch black with a dirty tan covering that retains well. Nose is roast malt, light smoke, spice, dark fruits, cocoa nibs. Taste comprises roast maltings, spice, dark fruit rinds, sticky toffee, red wine vibes, red berry fruits, plummy depths, brown sugar, woody twang. Medium + body, fine carbonation, light smoke in the close. Decent stuff, subtle rausch, good balance, drinks well below the ABV!

This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a nice looking dark brown close to black color. It kinda poured like motor oil. Thin tan quarter finger head coats the top of the beer.
The smell had a big boozy blast of sweet bourbon with an ample amount of smoke and a light sweet maple running underneath my nose.
The taste was mainly sweet with a nice smooth smokey underneath.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a really nice sweet smooth bourbon aftertaste leading to a dry finish.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good smoked Imperial Stout. I’d bang this again.
