Black as night and every bit Imperial, this RIS was originally launched to tremendous accolades. Aged in Whiskey barrels, this barrel aged version meshes the rich chocolates and the coffee-like aromatics with the sweet whiskey nose and drying character of the oak. Slightly behind on the palate are the hops, held in restraint by the wonderfully full mouth-feel and broad flavors brought on by the perfect blend of so many malted barley varieties. Bottled. Dark brown with lace. Nose of chocolate, coffee, caramel, nicely roasted. Great nose. Creamy toffee and chocolate flavor, vanilla, coffee, very tasty stuff.

Pours pitch black with a thick foamy brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, whisky, vanilla, oak, toffee, hints of tobacco and ash. Taste is sweetish, syrupy and slightly roasty with some ash, tobacco, coffee, whisky and dark chocolate. Finish is sweetish, ashy and woody with heavy carbonation, some roastiness, dark chocolate, coffee and oak. Okay roasty and heavily carbonated BA IS, but not extraordinary.

Black, beige head. Somewhat sour aroma, malts, yeast, roasted malts, ash. Sweet malty flavour, coffee, sugar. Malty finish, caramel, roasted malts.

Thanks! to caesar. 750 ml. bottle sampled @ ZZT XIII. Black, solid mocha. Nose is mocha, caramel, black berries, candy & brambleberries. Taste is powdery mocha, grains, sweet chewing gum, mocha, caramel, touch thin, grainy, dark berries jam, light roast, not getting much barrel. A bit thin & powdery but rather nice overall.

Bottle @ ZZT, small sample. Dark color, short frothy head. Aroma of roast, molasses, coffee, slight oak. Bit dry in taste, roasty bitterness, lots of roast and coffee bitterness, molasses. A bit one dimensional in the roasty bitterness, could have had more depth with some cookie sweetness for example. Decent beer.

Bottle @ ZZT XII. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized brown. Aroma is malts, some dark malts, light roast. Taste malts, roast, some coffee, a hint of dark chocolate, a bit earthy, some alcohol, firm bitter. Decent body, high carbonation. Hmm ok but too fizzy carbonation which gets in the way of the flavor. Too bad. 10-7-7-4-7=7.0. -- Tried first in 2015 (7.0) but rerating it December 10th 2021. Opaque black color, average sized off-white to beige head. Aroma is malts, soft roast, heavy whiskey. Flavor is malts, roasted malts, roasty bitter, liquor so probably whiskey but also a light vanilla hint. Better to me now than 2015. 7-8-8-7-8.

Bottle sample at GTMW. Pitch black color, brown head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of tobacco, burnt espresso, dark chocolate. Taste is rich roasty vanilla, coffee, cocoa. Delicious.
