Track 12 is a non fruited sour ale. It is a blend of three base beers (Avant Garde, a previously unreleased sour brown base and Gift of the Magi). There were two barrels of Avant Garde, one oak barrel of the sour brown and a splash of the Magi in the final blend. The final blend has flavors of sweet and sour with a pronounced musty nose. Unlike any other sour beer we have produced here at The Lost Abbey, this one has some very long term possibilities.

It’s hard to believe just how much faith there is in Heaven and Hell considering nobody we know has ever sent pictures from the Pearly Gates or the Crossroads of Hell. Your jet-setting boss can’t claim to have a timeshare in Heaven. The food snob at work can’t peruse Yelp reviews to determine if the gluttonous all you can eat lobster buffet is mediocre or divine. And last we checked you can’t book a room at either place on Internet travel sites. Pretty much not a single person any of us knows can tell what Heaven and Hell are like.

Yet they persist, with their fantastic imaginative descriptions and visions of banished heathens and the faithful being given their eternal rest. But not us. We here at The Lost Abbey figure our days are better spent on things other than worrying about our ever after. So each morning we get up and make beers for “Sinners and Saints Alike.” And when we fail to respire, we’ll let Heaven or Hell take us wherever the cosmos point us. Of course it doesn’t mean we’re not silently hoping they need great brewers in Heaven—especially ones with Hellish imaginations…

375mL bottle, pours a hazy dark amber, no head. Aroma reveals acetone, some oak, and balsamic. Flavour is fairly acetic, with balsamic, intense acetic acid, and some oak. Acetic and oaky. Harsh as hell.

Bottle bought through Drikkeriget. Pours hazy reddish golden with a very small offwhite head that doesn’t leave much trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and fruity with crackers, dark bread, lemon juice, grapes, hay, dry soil, barnyard, vinegar and lemon zest. Taste is sour, slightly malty and slightly fruity. Mouthfeel is dry, tart and light to medium bodied. Finish is sour with balanced malts, fruit and acidity. Very nicely balanced. I love how the malts are there without overwhelming and that the acidity is balanced and not huge in that charming American way. Bottle shared by Adam, thanks! Pours a hazy deep amber orange with a white head that starts and remains at the edges. Aroma has sour cherry and red fruits with light acid and oak. Flavor has a nice sour fruit note with earthy funk, some oak and a bit of acid.

Thanks to Kraddel. 375 ml. bottle split by 2. Pours a dark amber, little white head on the side. Nose is fascinating, puckering oak with a touch of glue but lots of mandarin, fruity mixed with some candy sugar malts, wonderful mix of malts & great sour character. Taste is puckering big fruity mandarin, just the right touch of candy malts, great mix with light honey, oak, brett, very light lactic, lemon, fascinating complimentary touch of caramel, fruity wine, caramel & puckering sour,… Fittingly malty body but only lightly so with quite a bit of oak, touch wine, caramel,… Really good. Lost Abbey sours are amazing. Great beer.
