We first brewed this beast to honor the Pine Box boys and their iconic Seattle beer nirvana. We liked it too much to let it go away, so The First Nail returns. An oatmeal stout of epic proportions with brewer’s licorice, smoked barley and aged on cinnamon bark. The Nail pounds your palate, challenges your perception of all that you’ve known of beer and leaves you wanting ... another sip. "A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thouroughly sure" -VWP.

Wax-dipped bomber. Pours abyss black with a medium tan head with great retention. Aroma is cinnamon, licorice, chocolate, earth. Taste is the same, pretty damn harsh, but nice flavor. Full oily palate. Tasty but extreme to a fault. I now know it’s possible for a beer to have too much flavor. Strong and very hard to drink.

Due to artificial coloured illumination, appearance not estimable, arbitrary 4/5 Sweet, treacle, soy sauce, (cigar)tobacco perfume. Very sweet chocolate, cherries in chocolate, maltsyrup (in a good way), liquorice. Very slick, viscous, full-bodied, warming. Impressive, goes beyond the usual stout-like features. Thanks people for sharing!

Flight at brewery. Black as night. Cinnamon, bark, licorice is strong. Flavor is similar but no felt etoh. A nice silky mouthfeel. Sweetness is appreciated but the spices are a bit too strong.

Draft pour at the brewery. Pours a cola like black color with a tan head. Strange aroma, with vanilla, licorice, and some vegetal sides to it. A lot of licorice in the flavor. More of a vegetable/spice beer than an imperial stout to me. A little tough to drink, but has some positive qualities about it. Hope.to give this another chance someday, but disappointed for now.

Bottle @ What the Funk Denver 2014. Black appearance with a brown head. Absolutely delicious nose. Cinnamon, dark chocolate, fudge, and roast in the nose. Somewhat sweet and a bit boozy but truly delicious flavor. Tons of fudge and cinnamon. Really reminds me of Abraxas without the chilies. One of my favorite beers of the festival.
