BATCH 17 (blended in July 2014) was distributed as follows:

Type in BATCH
Moscatel 68%
Brandy 8%
Oloroso 8%
New Oak Medium Toast 8%
New Oak High Toast 8%
This Oak Aged is copper brown in colour and its aroma is a mixture of muscatel aromas and Quadrupel. In addition to sweet honey, flowery meadows with almond and caramel, we also distinguish the aroma of muscatel wine and, of course, that of oak. This Quadrupel too has been lagered in barriques, most of which are burned on the inside. Out of all batches released so far, this batch has the smokiest and fullest flavour. The influence of Oloroso and Brandy barrels also has a distinct side-effect. Ultimately, the complex flavour is full, smooth and balanced. The aftertaste is that of wood tannins, smoke, almonds, dates and caramel, the latter giving this batch a bitter-sweet touch.

Another one in this interesting series of oak-aged trappists. Thin, loose, lightly lacing but quickly dissolving, pale beige head, colour a cloudy bronze with purplish hue and lots of dark debris near the bottom. Pleasant and perfumey aroma of marzipan, tawny port and red wine, milk chocolate, lots of vanilla-like tannins, kahlua, candi syrup, toasted wood, blue grapes, earth, sherry, figs, banana, dried cake, brown rhum, hints of varnish and fresh paint. Sweet and fruity onset, candi sugar, banana, pear and brambleberries, finely tingling carbo, basic sourish accent for balance, smooth and full mouthfeel, lovely maltiness, caramelly and subtly chocolatey, bit toasted too, candi sugary sweetness running through it all but not becoming too cloying, drying finish with lots of woody tannins, herbal hop bitterness for balance, lingering yeast ’powderiness’ and, unsurprisingly, booze, in the form of a warming, perhaps here and there a bit burning, rhum- and brandy-like alcohol. Like the other ones, recommended if you’re in big, sweet, rich trappists / quadrupels; seems a tad sweeter than the previous one I had, but comparing them only makes sense if you have the different editions next to each other. Enjoyed by itself, this is a big, warming, satisfying sipper.

Fast gone off-white head over fully hazy dark brown beer. Cheesy, blue cheese, Tilsit, Roquefort,...; alcohol, vanilla. Sweet-fusels-alcoholic-vanilla. Milkchocolate. Finish is dry-woody, wry even. Well-bodied, quite slick, dry to wry woodiness seems to diminish the body. Good, if somewhat severe tastign BW.

kastanje rood/bruinmet schuimige kaki/bruine kraag.

Very hazy amber beer, tidy cream colour head. Smooth and slightly soft palate, semi dry with modest fine carbonation. Sweet dry vanilla streaked creamy malts. Bubblegum and banana esters. Mild spice. Touches of sweet wine and mellow brandy. Finishes smooth and semi dry and mildly bitter. A beer of some subtleties, goes down easy for it’s abv.
