The official Best Hefeweizen in the World, courtesy of the 2020 World Beer Awards!
This Bavarian style Hefeweizen is the one that started it all! The first Fahr beer to be produced commercially in 2015. However, this beer had been in development for much longer (Jochen can’t even remember how long – that long!). This beer has won numerous awards before and after it became commercially available. The beer itself is hazy with a medium body to it, smooth from start to finish. Taste the aromas of wheat grass, white pepper, banana, and clove.

Citrus and banana. Ingredients don't mesh super well. Golden pour with ok head. Light sweet finish, and some citrus that cloys for a bit. Can.

Bottle, Legacy. The colour is a bit off - rather dull tan, more of an ur-weiss colour but it doesn't really look like that's what they're aiming for here. The aroma has a light banana and wheat, a fairly heavy and oxidized yeast note, which would explain the colour. I don't see an age statement on the bottle, and this could be older, although it's new to the store. On the palate, there's a light wheaty acidity up front, then heavier, gluier malts towards the back. That oxidized yeast note is quite heavy all the way through. The Weihenstephan yeast is not at its best here.
Now, the biggest mistake people make wanting to be a "German-style brewery" is that almost nobody does lager and weizen well. Only the larger breweries in southern Bavaria really excel at both. So maybe Fahr will turn out to be better at lagers but their early lineup is heavy on the wheat beers. When I think of new world breweries going with a wheat beer flagship, I think of Denison's or maybe Alenda down in Brazil, and they have taken the time to absolutely master the style before making it a flagship. Fahr isn't there yet, though I really hope they do because nobody makes a decent hefeweizen in Western Canada. But yeah, this isn't the best representation of weizen, unfortunately.

On tap. (5.3% ABV) Pours a hazy gold-yellow with an average, creamy, long lasting, white head that laces. Sweet aroma of banana, bubble gum, wheat malt and light clove. Sweet flavour of wheat malt, banana and a hint of clove with a dry, mildly bitter, grassy hop finish. Light body with a creamy, smooth texture and average carbonation. Not bad.
