SuperCollider Double IPA is the antimatter to uninspired IPAs. Meddling with the limits of regular Ontario IPAs, the Flying Monkeys brewed a double that blows a black hole in the taste buds of our IPA lovers.

650ml bomber from the brewery.
Clear dark amber pour, a little lighter than i expected. Big fluffy white head, good retention and lacing. Aroma of deep pine resin, dark roasted malts, even some dark semi bitter fruits. Hops get quite a bit more pungent asit warms. The malts get sweeter, and the alcohol makes an appearance. The alcohol is quite well hidden though for such a big beer. A bitter finish with a light roasted malt finish. Tastes like a blend of the smashbomb and netherworld turned up to 11.

I drank this with my friend Don, who is Chinese Canadian. He described this pretty well. Its kinda like being the tallest person at a Chinese wedding. Compared to other Ontario beers this is great. Compared to IIPAs anywhere, not so much.

Amber and bright. Big chewy aroma. Sweet and chew with some alcohol in the finish. Light fruitiness but overall it’s a bit messy. Thanks, Doug!

(650mL bottle from LCBO) Pours a deep brownish amber with miniscule off-white head. Aroma a mess, sweet toffee malts, booze, hop resin and something like rotting fruit or a mix of ketchup and soya sauce. Not to be smelled. Flavour is a little better, very sweet malts at the start with some green hops, roast kicks in mid-palate and then the finish dries down like classic cough syrup with booze, resin and alcohol and sweet red fruit all mixed up. Long dry medicinal finish. Mouthfeel surprisingly watery with prickly carbonation. Brash, out of balance and with too many off flavours, like a DIPA that got lost and became a bad American barleywine.

Hard hops, hard smell. Full of bitter flavours, almost poison with bitter florals and permeating scents. I’m not sure how much more of an IPA I taste in this supposed double - it’s India but not Nirvana,by any means. Had half a glass thanks to dude at bar freshly arrived from Ontario farm. Things are like that. At the Rhino.

Bomber from the LCBO. Pours a clean deep amber colour with an off-white frothy head that goes down slowly and leaves good lace. Aromas are all-over, with some roasted malts, some sweet ones, some alcohol, some dark fruits and something that smell weird... like food gone bad (soya sauce-like). I can see slight residue around the opening of the bottle, so not sure if some air got in, as some of the brew got out. Not as bitter as I expected. Hard to concentrate on the taste (as the smell is really repulsing me). I still gave it a decent note (as the rest of the scent is good). Goes down quite easy and the lingering aftertaste is actually really (well-balanced between the dryness and bitterness). The roasted malt comes out way after, and this comes and saves this one for me.

From my dear Canadian brother, bomber: Pours a really dark colour for a DIPA; it is kind of a light brown colour with a beige head of small stature. Kind of a weird aroma that doesn’t really indicate how the beer will actually taste. Kind of malty aroma, with not really that much hops. Taste is plenty bitter from all them hop jawns. It is also quite malty. Sort of a beer that is cranked up, but without being cranked to a proper equilibrium. Alcohol is well covered, however. Not my favourite. Sorry dear brother.

Pours with a huge, solid, undulating head and a copper-yellow body with plenty of carbonation. The aroma is sweet hops and some bitter hops as a finish. Sampled at 20.1 celsius it has a hoppy citrus character but the mouthfeel is bad - all that alcohol and what made it lingers too long on the tongue. Out of balance, and an okay beer, but there are better double-IPAs out there.

Bottle: Poured a deep copper color ale with a large foamy head with OK retention and light lacing. Aroma of citrus and piney hops with loads of resinous notes is quite powerful. Taste is also dominated by loads of citrus and floral notes with some solid notes of pines and resin. Malt backbone is quite solid with light caramelized notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed and interesting though a bit stale and I think this would have been better had it been released sooner form the LCBO.
