The Binchoise XO is a unique beer that never ceases to seduce the amateurs of always or newly conquered by this true testimony of the passion and the know-how of our Master-Brewer, Bruno De Ghorain. It is served as an aperitif, at the time of the cheese (it accompanies marvellously the blue cheeses) and at the time of the dessert where it will sublimate your so chocolate.

Bottle, 75cl corked. From trade with Papsoe. An unclear, amber colored beer with a small, white head. It’s rather alcoholic on the nose, with dried fruits and quite a lot of booze. Armangnac for sure. Something reminiscent of sulphur too. It’s full-bodied and warming, with a soft carbonation. Quite fruity and boozy flavor with some dried fruits and a touch of caramel. Lasting finish. Overall, too much alcohol in this one, but it’s not all pleasant anyway. 131231

75 cl. bottle split by 3. I was quite surprised when I saw both this one & the Scott variant at the local supermarket. I have seen them before at the better beer stores but I didn’t expect at all to come across them at the supermarket. For me this was definitive proof as that barrel aging is on the verge of becoming mainstream in Belgium after seeing so many of these kinds of beers at the recent Kerstbierfestival in Essen. An evolution that I can honestly say, I never saw coming. Barrel aging seems to be tied to Christmas beers for some reason for the moment being. Seeing it there and then, I finally decided to pull the trigger on one of these with a moderate fear of disappointment. The price tag of 17+ € is one that is bordering on the insane in my opinion (esp. compared to other Belgian specialty beers). The concept seems not a bad one, not sure how much faith I have in it. Inspired by the Italian (not the USA one) craft scene, they made an exceptionally heavy wort (one that is meant to resemble must in gravity) & aged it on Armagnac barrels (a spirit with which I have little familiarity). It is presented in the same gorgeous Champagne bottle as Armand 4 (“inspiration” of the brewery) + obv. corked & caged, I have heard rumoured). I looks really beautiful to say the least. I drank it as an appetizer as suggested on the back of the bottle. While I am not sure if it entirely worked in terms of the dinner as an appetitive, it wasn’t a mismatch. It poured a reddish dark strawberry amber with an okay enough off-white head. Taste was rather sweetish with overripe strawberries, ripper red fruits, warming grainy alcohol quality with faint oak, thicker sticky caramel malts, thick cooked apples, overripe fruits, warming. Warming grain alcohol remained throughout, quite sweet & easier to drink than expected. Carb. is a touch higher than normal. Overall it was quite good & respectable + liked by everyone. It was quite interesting in that it imitated a strong liquor of sorts. While I didn’t feel like it live up to the price for me & I am as usual not going to bother with it again, it did provide something else, it didn’t feel like a rip-off. It did put quite some effort into the whole thing.

Deep amber, mid sized, thick head. Nose of oak, calvados, apple juice, alcohol and funk . Taste of oak casks, brandy, calvados, apples and alcohol. Pretty good, but just a liiitle bit too strong for its own good.

Hazy amber beer. Tidy pale cream coloured head. Light palate, a little soft and a little dry. Interesting beer, plenty of Belgian quirkiness. Hides the 12.0% well. Mixed fruit salad sweets integrates well with sweetish brandy and a little vanilla. Minerals. Semi dry finish with a sweetish fruity tang. Not had anything quite like this before! Nice!

Corked bottle, courtesy of Jesper
Hazy amber color; small head. The aroma is mild, with some fruits, oak, wood, and light alcohol. Highly carbonated; sweet flavor, some malt and vanilla oak, some trace of spirit, and quite high alcohol perception. Low bitterness.
It’s not the kind of beer that barrel-ages well., it’s more likely to get messy.
