Indigenous to northern Europe, Baltic Porters historically stem from the shipping of British porters to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic Porters are often brewed with lager yeast, which is the tradition we follow. Big & bold, with flavors of coffee, dark fruit & raisins, this black beer is smooth as a chocolate swirl.

Pours very dark, hints at red and brown. Full foamy head, dark beige in color. Aroma starts with chocolate and espresso, followed by some fruitcake fruitiness, like candied cherries and anise. Flavor is roasty and a bit astringent, with an acrid finish. Very husky. Harsh and unbalanced.

So solid. Had this guy on tap at Rattle and Hum during Craft Beer Week. Pours pitch dark with a soft off-white head. Smells of roasted malts and coffee. Taste: delicious, rich, sweet yet somewhat bitter. Quite smooth and full.

bottle, pours black, medium tan head. Aroma is sour peach, black patent malt, and a roasty coffee. Lots of chocolate, wow. I love the roastyness. Nice.

22 oz bottle. Pours a pitch black, thick color, solid thick dark tan head. Aroma is malts, chocolate, notes of dried fruits. Flavor is pretty phenomenal - creamy coffee and chocolate notes, full bodied. Alcohol is slightly present, but not overwhelming. A nice beer to let warm which allows additional flavors and aromas to be released.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with an orangey-brown head. The aroma has notes of sweet and roasted malt, chocolate, and cittrus. The flavor is sweet and acidic from the rosted malt combined with notes of alcohol and lighter notes of soy sauce. The alcohol burns the tongue and palate.

Pours dark brown with light brown head. Aromas of chocolate and coffee. Similar flavors with some dark fruits and alcohol. Moderately sweet. Medium to full body with mild carbonation and a nice creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of aromatic coffee with notes of creamy black chocolate. Taste is very well balance between aromatic coffee without any dryness with some great creamy black chocolate notes with some subtle dry raisins in the finish. Body is quite full with a creamy texture and no apparent alcohol. Another very nice beer from a great brewer.

Bottle with thanks to coyotehunter. Pours a dark brown with little head. Aromas? well, there’s a bit of dark malt, with some grapefruit or something hoppy, bananas and Hubba Bubba. Flavor is cola-like, with a very fizzy texture has a bit of cloves, some vanilla and a little wood.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Gilly's, 8/17/09

Aroma: Coffee, chocolate, roasted malts
Appearance: Dark brown color, 3 fingers of fluffy brown head, lots of lacing
Flavor: Big maltiness, burnt, some faint smokey, with the same flavors apparent in the nose, some licorice, light bitterness, but really just a malt bomb all over
Palate: A bit on the oily side, medium to full body, chewy and creamy
Overall Impression: I believe this is my first Baltic Porter, and I found it to be quite tasty. A nice beer indeed. I'm glad this is my first from the style, because it is pretty tasty, making me want to try more Baltic Porters.

Almost non-aromatic with only a faint hint of raisins. Black pour with an enormous brown head. Thick, chewy mouthfeel. Flavors are of stewed prunes, horehound, and charcoal. When you throw it down hard you can taste licorice. Somewhat grassy finish. Drinks like an imp stout, but far less bitter.
