Ne Zwarte Loemelaer

Pours very dark brown, under a huge ( full glass ) white head. Smell is roasty, some caramel notes. taste is sharp, bitter, roasty ( burnt ) , intense. rather thin mf, extremely high carbo ( of course ) Nice, burnt malts in the finish. good taste, too bad for the extreme carbo and foam.

Seen the fact that this beer company has attempted to create a complete range of beer styles in a short amount of time, it comes as no surprise it also has this ’massieve ale’, though the use of the word ’zwarte’ (black) seems a bit out of place in this one, since it pours a hazy bronze colour, not black as the name would suggest; off-white, creamy, stable head. Aroma of caramel, some bitter chocolate, sweet tobacco, raisins, liquorice, candi sugar, plums. Sweet taste, candi syrup and caramelly malts, stone fruit, resinous mouthfeel, spicy yeastiness increasing towards the finish, which is otherwise malty with a gentle herbal hop bitterishness. Not bad, though I expect more complexity from this particular beer style.

Sampled from bottle @ Tim needs to get rid of his ticks tasting. Nice dark red to purple brown color, average sized off-white to beige head. Smell and taste malts, lightly dark malts, light to moderately bitter, a hint of roast in the background. Average to medium body and carbonation. Ok beer.

Thanks to tderoeck! 330 ml. bottle sampled @ “Tim needs to get rid of his ticks” Tasting. Enjoyed together with tderoeck, Benzai & Alengrin. Tasted the entire current line-up of Loemelaer (9 beers currently) after each other. Bottle says, Zwarte Dubbel – looks like even they didn’t dare calling this a stout. Appearance is too light like all of their other beers, red-hued blackish dark brown, tanned head. Nose is weak, dust, cardboard, dull, lots of caramel extract. Taste like they added a bunch of caramel extract etc. to one of their other beers, bitter caramel extract, light roast, syrup, light soy sauce taste. Thin, extract & grainy-like. Ehhhhh……

23/I/15 - 33cl bottle brought from the brewer @ "I need to get rid of my Belgian ticks" tasting - BB: VI/2015 (2015-76)

Clear dark red to reddish brown beer ("zwart"??), small creamy irregular beige head, dissipates quickly, non adhesive. Aroma: very malty, bit roasted, some caramel, grains, little sweet. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty bitter, some caramel, little sour, roasted notes, quite some alcohol, bit sweet, banana. Aftertaste: caramel, nice bitterness, soft sour touch, bit resinous, grassy hops, lots of roasted malts, coffee. Decent, but I'm not sure the yeast strain chosen is very compliant with this beer style.
