Anvil ESB is our interpretation of a traditional British-style pub ale. Deep amber in color, a toasty character from British malts and a touch of kettle caramelization blend seamlessly with a mild English hop profile. Its delicate balance of flavors will keep you coming back pint after pint, making it a complex creation we’re proud to call our flagship beer.

(Bottle 65 cl) Beautiful dark amber with a small, off-white head. Fat, flowery and slightly perfumy aroma hops in the nose. Body is dominated by sweetish caramel and toffee. Quite light and very drinkable with a faint, dry, bitter whiff from the aroma hops. Doesn’t at all remind me of a British-style ESB, more like a watered-down American Barleywine. And that’s not a bad thing.... 160106

Bottle. Rich honey amber with an off-white head. Malty/caramel aroma. Toffee/caramel flavor with some citrus hop and spice. Medium body and easy drinking. Not a bad take on an ESB.

Dark amber ale with a thin off-white head. Hoppy malts with alcohol and sugar notes in aroma, very faint. Light sweet sugar with barely any hops, surprising considering the origin. Dryish and light bodied ESB. Dissapointing.

Sampled at marinaro500’s post-Thanksgiving gathering, provided by the host. Cloudy orange body, thin cream head. Caramely aroma with nice earthy (and floral) hops and minerals. Sharp earthy hops cut the breads and caramels, leaving a relatively long finish with just a touch of bitterness and pine. Coppery. Very tasty despite the low ABV; this is indeed a liquid cookie.

Bottle Herbal hop, caramel and session style spicyness. Hazy orange brown, nice creamy cover. Grassy and pine hop notes, a bit nut on a solid malt base, all nicely balanced. Sparkly mouthfeel, slowly fading grassy hops. Very nice and soothing my soul after having to pay 5$ for a SNPA at the conference reception this evening....

Sampled draught at Stuffed Sandwich, Greater Los Angeles.
Nut brown, creamy head. Restrained sweetness. Deep pleasant malt character with well balanced flowery hop character and pleasant orangey finish with good bitterness. And here wai I thinking that AleSmith could only excel at weirdo over-the-top style beers, then they do the best non-cask bitter I’ve ever had...

Thanks to Lord Gorlock for slipping this in to me under the noses of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Beautiful deep amber color with a thick white head. Mellow nose of hops and malt in just the right proportions. Nice malty flavor with a bit of bitterness in the background, makes this a real well done brew in a style that’s under appreciated in the U.S. We need more ESBs like this one.

2003 bottle. Great reddish-copper with some lighter yellows and oranges. Small off-white head that lingers on throughout much of the beer. Good amount of lacing. Hazy and bottle conditioned! I would theorize that you can judge most bitters by their aroma. This one has smells of sweet nuttiness, caramel malt, nice medium-dry floral hops. Delicate but strong. Begins with a mix of lightly bitter hops which are beautifully wedded to a lovely caramel malt. Floral spiciness apparent throughout and bottle conditioning provides for a unique peppery texture due to natural carbonation to give the beer a little bite. Not seein much fruit, maybe some apricots and light peaches towards the finish. Medium body, dripping with quality. Subtle. Maybe a slight astringency on the end of the finish due to more hops than malt, but nothing substantial.

Earthy, fuggley, quality brew - nice restrained English-style brew. Surprisingly unassertive for AleSmith.
