75 cl bottle. Pours cloudy amber to brown with a small tan head. Aroma is caramelish and slight phenolic. Toasted malty. Toasted malty, slight phenolic and breadish. Toasted and breadish, light sweet finish.

Package (bottle and glass) from Delhaize; this apparently is a refermented version of the classic Gordon X-Mas, which basically sparked the Scotch-style Belgian Christmas ale tradition. Off-white, creamy, stable head, dark burgundy colour, hazy. Aroma of caramel, wet leather, raisins, coffee grounds, old cookies, dried plums and something vaguely sulphuric. Malty taste with restrained, dried fruitiness, sweetish, caramelly malt sweetness with a hint of roasted coffee bitterness in the background, some warming alcohol in the finish, lightly yeasty. Perhaps a bit more complex than the regular version, but there are dozens of more interesting refermented Christmas ales around. Definitely not worth its ridiculous price, no matter how fancy the box or how limited the production. Will probably not buy this again next year (though I’m stuck with the thistle glass now...).

Clear red brown beer, big aery beige creamy head, little stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty, hay, straw, caramel, bit dusty, some cardboard, bit of sulphur. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet caramel start, malty, sugary, bit dirty. Aftertaste: bitter, sweet, malty, caramel, little hoppy, very weird and quite disappointing.

750 ml. fancy bottle sampled @ O.B.E.R. Kestbierfestival 2014. (Thx!) Completely clear amber with no head. Nose is boring sugar with light yeast, zero depth or complexity. Taste is biter leaves, bark, oily, dull sugar,… Oily. Boring, no complexity, Palm makes sense here, for once I know where a Gordon beer is made. Crazily expensive & you get this. This is the opposite of where the beer scene in Belgium should be evolving towards.
