Indra shared this 2003, 22oz bottle at his Strong Ale gathering. Pours a murky brown color. Aroma is aged malt (in a positive way, not too musky or cardboard-y yet), with raisin, and age. Taste has more flavor evaporation from the age but some raisin and lightly cardboard malts. Seems well with this age on it but I would not age it further.

22 oz bottle, 2003 Vintage shared by Indra. Pour is cloudy orange amber, with a 1/2 inch off whitehead. Big thick lacing on the glass. Aroma, really soft and inviting caramel sweetness, malty, wonderful. Taste is malty, caramel, and spicy nutmeg. A bit of oxidation, though held up well overall. Palate is medium, mouth coating - a little cardboard. I enjoyed trying this one.

2003 bomber consumed on 10/6/06. I ordered this bottle from Liquid Solutions in 2003 and have kept it in my possession since.
Oddly enough, this one delivered a fair amount of enamel-colored head that faded to partial-cover, leaving no lacing behind. The body is a dark amber with some chestnut highlights and a bit of copper thrown in when held to the light.
Heavy, heavy oxidation in the nose. Behind that is a plethora of hard crystal malt, crunchy toasted malt and some soft vanilla. But the oxidation is more cardboard-like than not and very disconcerting. Some sweet plums emerge on the finish, after warming, but it’s somewhat sickening and not at all cohesive with the beer. Alcohol is soft, but builds on the nose steadily. Light raisins and dried cherries are present as well. But I keep getting brought back to the oxidation.
Heavily oxidized flavor is even more dominated by cardboard than the aroma. The mouthfeel, further, is lean, seemingly filtered and just dosent have the residual sweetness that an old ale should have to go the distance. Light berries, figs and some chocolate covered coffee beans. Gets thin, grainy/crunchy/bready on the finish. Can’t finish it. Alcohol is definitely notable and combined with the oxidation, ruins the experience.
Not sure what went wrong here. Looks like Csbosox’ bottle of the same age was in fine condition. I even waxed the cap to ward off oxidation. That’s the risk of aging, I guess, as I certainly kept this bottle in prime conditions. Oh well, I’ll try it again another time.

Sampled at the Richmond Beer Industry Gathering 2006. Clear light amber body with a small white head. Sweet malty aroma. Sweet gentle caramel flavor.

kp’s Fest of 26. Clear medium brown with a fleeting head. Complex aroma, dark caramel, dried fruits, figs. Moderate sweetness. Straddles the fence that separates the Old Ales from the Barleywines. Good beer whatever you choose to call it.

(Bottle 65 cl) Pours a very pretty, warm amber with a small, rough head. Sweetish, caramelish nose. Full-bodied with lots of sweet caramel and some nutty accents. This is really closer to a Barley Wine in style. Tasted at the Oklahoma Beer tasting March 06 hosted by mjames and lilannie. 250306

A red beer with a huge beige head. The aroma is sweet with primariry notes of coriander, while the flavor is sweet with loads of alcohol, as well as lesser notes of caramel and spices. The spices gives it a very dry end.

Bottle. 2004. Clear amber-red with a nice off-white head. Rich toffee malt aroma with some spice. Vanilla flavors backed by malt and caramel. Easy drinking. This beer ended up reminding me of drinking a coke. It was sweet, lightly syrupy, and just got on the wrong wide of me. Maybe it’s better when it’s aged, but I could easily pass.

Bottle Pours a clear deep copper color witha small but very fizzy sandy colored head that quickly dissipates. Blocky lacing. Lots of malt and caramel on the nose with a littel hops and brown sugar. Flavors are dark malt, old barrels, caramel and maple syrup. Feel is nothing special, and aftertaste is a woody, slightly bitter flavor.

2003 bottling. I really wasn’t impressed with this as a barleywine- it did pour pale for a bw (amber/copper with a clumping cream head) but I didn’t discern much barleywine character in the aroma or flavor either. Mostly caramel and brown sugar notes offsetting typical PNW grapefruit/pine hops. Not particularly bitter or complex, and alcohol was hardly noticeable. Disappointing.
