Collab with two of America’s pioneering sour ale producers (among other styles of course), two legendary names, Russian River and Allagash – which, in the context of this year’s Quintessence event, sent over their own sour ales to have them blended with Cantillon lambic. Beautiful label too – it must be said. Egg-white, moussy, opening and dissolving head, leaving nothing behind eventually; misty old-golden robe with beige tinge. Aroma of bitter fruit peel, grapefruit zest, grape seeds, quinine, wood, dandelion to even bitterroot or mugwort, unripe green plum, raw quince, granite-like minerality. Dry and crisp onset, soft carb, rounded and vinous mouthfeel; aspects of unripe green plum, grape skin and apple core astringently penetrate a bread-crusty backbone, further dried by strong lactic acid and tannic woodiness. Aspects of dried fruit (like dried apricot) linger at the back, soon overshadowed by hoppy effects, adding a quinine- and dandelion-like bitterness with even a somewhat citric edge; it accentuates the bone dry effects of this astringent unripe stonefruit and sour grape flavour. Clearly a hoppy U.S. signature is present here, in quite an expressive, robust way, but the Cantillon lambic proves powerful enough to take up its part of the blend without being overruled by the others. Wild, powerful and colourful blend, with doubtlessly very high ageing potential. Glad I had this one!

Bottle. Cantillon. Soft haze on a glowing yellow gold. Dense white foam. Looks boss. Nose has tart lemon and lime. Fresh sawn oak. Big mineral notes. Taste is semi dry, tart and fresh. Light bitterness. Clean and bright with brisk carbonation. Moussy and fresh. Tart and semi dry finish. Nice.

0,75l from bottle at the Brewery. Yellow clear color, small white head. Smells funky earthy, minerals, almost vinous, wood, light grape notes. Lovely smell. Medium body, soft carbonation. Tastes grassy, earthy, spices, herbal, tobacco, tea notes, bergamot. Finishes lightly dry, lightly sour and medium bitter with notes of tobacco, some tea notes and herbs. I very much like this, great balance, not very sour at all, rather on the bitter side, which works here though

75cl bottle (bottled: 02 December 2019, 5%) @ brewery. Head is thin, white, quick gone. Colour is shiny gold, light hazy. Aroma is light sour fruity, old hops, woody, bit mineral, funky, old lemon, rhubarb, ripe orange, floral. Taste is even better than aroma, peach, nice old hops, apricot, floral, mild sour fruity, nice harmonic bitterness, old lemon touch, velvety mouthfeel, woody touch, soft carbonation, very complex beer, one od the best from this brewery, fully enjoyed.

From a bottle at Quintessence. Clear golden pour with a fleeting white head. Peach bouquet. Nice stone fruit/white nectarine/and tart lemon highlights. Tart but with nuisances malt and cereal backbeats. Good body and mouthfeel.

2019 bottle at Quintessence 2022. Hazy golden color with white head. Aroma is nice funk, earthy, barn, but also grapefruit, mushrooms. Taste is the same. Pretty nice barn, great, but the American character plays the main role here.
