Belgian-Style Brown Ale Brewed with Yams, Molasses, Maple Syrup and Spices
Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the “pumpkin” beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. Rather than ferment the beer with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this version was 100% fermented with brettanomyces, adding a dry, earthy quality to the traditionally bold and spicy beer.

Bottled 750ml. -from Csak a Jó Sör, Budapest brought to Metropola by heavy (thanks!). Brown coloured, small to medium sized off-white head, spicy fruity nose. Moderate and sweet malty, fruity and spicy with pretty strong alcohol presence. Some dry notes of maple syrup and spices in the finish. Warming alcohol finish with random spices. Interesting, well done but alcohol is a bit too pronounced.

Refrigerated 75 cl brown bottle poured into an english pint glass. Pours clear reddish medium brown with small off-white head which dissipates quickly. Little lacing, medium body, slightly syrupy texture, low carbonation, and yam aroma. Taste is yams, spice, and alcohol. Too much alcohol for me, needs more carbonation, and not a big fan of the yams.

0.75l bottle. Dark ruby body, beige head. Aroma of champagne yeast, cherry jam, caramel, cinnamon and some candi sugar perhaps. There is some huge earthyness and lots of booze in the taste along with some juniper, caramel and ginger maybe. Not bad, but the alcohol is too harsh for me.

A reddish light brown ale with a thick brown head. In aroma, caramel malt with cinnamon, maple, grassy notes, smooth and pleasant. In mouth, a nice smooth candy sugar with molasses, maple, curacao and warming alcohol. Tasted Feb. 24 2013.

From a 75 cl bottle shared at Canaan Valley. Pours a murky amber with a thick off white head. Aroma dominated by spices, but not overwhelming. Flavor is a melange of yams, baking spices, and citrus hops. Spicy and bitter finish.

Bottle. Syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg and sweet potato malt aroma. Dark amber with small head. Very sweet nutmeg, cinnamon and sweet potato malt flavor with a strong bitter/astringent alcohol finish. Not too bad but the ABV makes it a bit rough.

Tap at Kasey’s Tavern, Chicago - 03/11/12. Hazy dark amber, approaching chestnut brown, with a thin white head that soon clears to the edges. Nose is banoffee pie, dark fruits, syrup and fig pudding, touch of booze. Tastes of dark toffee, pumpkin, booze, caramel. Full bodied, soft carbonation, boozey finish.

had on BBF 12. split by a very generous person but i dont remember who.. ( punches himself ) looks orange , very hazy smells more germankind of beer to me tastes earthy , sweet rerate ( from 3,4 ) after having again at ZEBF13 smell is pure medicinal. pours orange/copper. no foam at all. taste is awfull, medicinal. it hurted mly brain. worse beer on the festival ( all the others were awsomme ) i’d say 1,2 here.. so , meet in the middle .

Bottle. Sweet caramel, orange veggie, cinnamon, nutmeg, and alcohol as it warmed aroma. Hazy deep amber with a huge fizzy beige head. Sweet vegetal and caramel/maple malt, spices and alcohol flavor. Medium body, highly carbonated.

Tap. Pours a hazy deep copper amber with a small tan head and decent lacing. Aroma is caramel, maple, yeast and fruit. Flavor is the same, lightly spiced nutmeg, cinnamon and much more prominent yeast notes. Very light sweetness, quite off-puttingly astringent. Medium bitter finish. Medium body with a warming alcoholic finish and light metallic notes in the far finish as the bitterness fades. Underwhelming.
