Pours clear, dark chocolate brown. Unstable white head. Smell is bit caramely, some herbs. Taste is weak, very weak for the ABV ( paired with a low MF ) but nice on its own. It consists of notes of chocolate, caramel, earthyness, spices, sweetness, (roasted) malts, and a mild bitterness. Carbo is on the high side, but not too high. Would say its a pretty average beer, which is nothing bad, the market is simply overcrowded by these beers in Belgium. I’m leaving 0,1 out though, just because of the thin mf and lack of intensity, in a beer of 8,5 %

33cl Bottle from Prik&Tik Baelus. Dark brown colour, creamy beige head. Aroma of caramel, cocoa, light dusty, malty, some dark fruits, brown sugar. Flavour is medium sweet, malty, brown sugar, dark fruits, some chocolate, bittersweet finish. Medium bodied, firm carbonation. Nice enough Abbey Dubbel.

One of, so far, two Arendonk beers from a new micro brewery there, a ’massieve ale’ with moussy yet loose, crackling, lacing, pale greyish-white head and dark purplish burgundy colour, hazy with some dark dead yeast bits at the bottom, totally muddy with deposit (fortunately this is a dark beer so this effect will go largely unnoticed by many consumers, I suspect). Sweet aroma of cookie dough, butterscotch, brown sugar, medlar, honey, caramel candy, banana, raisins, liquorice, coriander seed, chocolate cake, touch of iron but not disturbing, cinnamon, ginger powder and a faint sulphuric H2S accent (sewer water) but too faint to become truly off-putting. Sweetish onset but restrainedly so, some candi sugar, hints of dried banana and pear, fizzy carbonation (a bit too fizzy for this style, actually), bit sourish, rounded and supple body, caramelly, toasted and nutty malt flavours in the middle adorned with Belgian spicy yeastiness and coriander, the promised roasted bitterness indeed shows up after a while but remains a vague echo in the finish and could have been a lot more pronounced to my taste; caramel sweetishness also lingers, as well as a powdery yeasty touch, a retronasal liquorice effect (also leaving a resinous feel on the tongue) and some earthy, ’deaf’ hop bitterishness, but not nearly enough to truly balance out the initial sweetness - and not enough to lend the finish any substantial body either, so it kind of ingloriously fades away into oblivion. Alcohol remains, in all, quite well hidden for a beer of this ABV, but is noticeable as an agreeable warming after effect. Not all that bad, has certain Scotch-like characteristics, but still a very old-fashioned Belgian ale not contributing anything substantial to the Belgian beer map. Enjoyable alright and the intention is undoubtedly good, but from a broader and more philosophical perspective, this is again too ’safe’, it lacks originality and personality, like so many of these beers by people who decide to start brewing Belgian ales in their kitchen nowadays. We urgently need much more ’boldness’ and creativity if we want to prevent this country from becoming a dusty and corny beer museum always repeating itself, instead of the haven of ’beer dynamics’ we used to be!

Bottle. Pours cloudy dark khaki brown with small off-white head. Clear aroma of caramel malt, fruit and hops, with some chlorine notes. Sweetish flavour of caramel malt, with notes of yeast and touches of fruit, complemented by bitter, hoppy notes. Hints of nuts. Estery and sweetish afteraste. Decent.

Clear dark brown colour, small one finger dense frothy beige head, recedes slowly to a thick stable layer. Sweet malty aroma, brown sugar, palm sugar, caramel, dark fruits. Taste medium sweet, light bitter, malt. Light body, watery texture, soft carbonation, aftertaste mild sweetbitter, chocolate notes, bit spicy, light alcoholic touch. Nothing special.
