Tasted at ’Bierweekend de lambiekstoempers’ 2015. Pours nearly black, smell is very intense, sweet, dark malts. Bit boozy. Taste is intense, very roasted grains. Very burnt, nice ! I heard a lot about this, half was very positive, half was very negative. I’d think I’ll join the first group, thank you !

Very strong Zonderik beer with thick, beige, dense head and near black colour. Aroma of peanuts, coffee grounds, bitter chocolate, bayleaf, cocoa, a hint of pipe tobacco, raisins, dried leaves, red wine, banana, some iron but not disturbing. Full, rich taste with medium carb, candied date and dried plum but not too sweet, nutty and caramelly, thickly layered maltiness with a retronasal coffee accent, a bit iron-like and chocolatey in the end, vinous and somewhat powdery mouthfeel, spicy hoppiness in the finish along with rhum-like warming alcohol. Potent brew, a slow sipper indeed, but comes closer to an imperial stout than to a barley wine... I guess it can be typified as an undetermined Belgian ’massieve ale’ with traits of both classic Anglo-Saxon styles. Very enjoyable, in any case - at least at this temperature, I cannot imagine drinking something like this at 65° C, which is apparently another option if the brewer’s intentions are to be followed...

Dark brown beer, white foam. Medium carbonation. Aroma of light roasted malts with dry fruit, liquorice and brown sugar. Sweet with light bitter aftertaste. Bit unbalanced.

Sample glass at the 18th Christmas Beer Festival in Essen on 15th Dec 2012. Dark brown body with an off-white, almost beige head. Rich aroma of coffee, chocolate and liquorice all rolled up in a spiced mince pie. Tasted like it’s smell: a real Christmas treat. Full of flavour and alcohol, wanted more, but the wife and other beers prevented me from sticking with this glorious brew. Should have had it later in the day, as I kept comparing my other beers to this monster and they all came up short.

Jet black colour, beige head. Aroma of liquorice, caramel, malts, chocolate and coffee. Bitter flavour, quite sweet, liquorice. Finish liquorice, coffee, quite bitter, hops, red fruits and pronounced alcoholic.
Enjoyable brew, works quite well as a digestif.

Deep brown beer carrying an olive sheen under a small cream-coloured head featuring the same greenish hue. Liquorice, parsley, lots of melanoidins even in aroma, molasses. Liquoice explosion with sweet and salty drop. Overall very sweet with a dull roasted bitterness. Slightly sharpish MF, better carbonated than it looks; quite slick but not really well-bodied. Aftertaste has sweet alcohol, as cheap fortified wine. Dear people from Columbus Management. You started off with three excellent beers. Now you ’ve added a duo, and they turn out overwrought, pompous, unidimensional and utterly devoid of interest. Find the common factor of the first 3, the one of the two others, and know what to do...

Heated gluhbeer-version shared with 77ships and Sebletitje at OBER Kerstbierfestival 2012. Opaque pitch black color, virtually no head. Smells like warm grains and tea. Taste is horrible. Warm grainy stew. Yuk.
