75 cl. bottle heated to 65 °C sampled @ 18th Christmasbeer festival in Essen. Yeah I went for the Glühbeer version of this one, I wanted something different to break the pace, I wanted a warm kriek, I remembered having one last year & it tasted like warm cherry juice which was quite nice actually – I was very easy talked into getting this as my warm beer option. Apparently the idea came from the brewer itself & the booklet even suggests adding sugar to taste, if he thinks this is the proper way to drink his beer why not… I personally found it to be rather abysmal & a horrendous idea, hope that cold this stuff is good for something. Pours a very dark brown mahogany black with little in the way of head sticking only to the sides, this is due to the heat I assume & yeah the beer is steaming. Smell is like gravy, stew, sort of rotting, dark malts, nuts in rotting leaves. The heat releases a whiff of alcohol making it first hard to smell & unpleasant afterwards for the double combo. Taste is bitter malts, gravy, stew, rotting, burned coffee grains, grainy, herbs, juice, garbage, very overripe dark fruits & very cheap, old chocolate. Grainy body – above all the heat also makes it very hard for me to drink more than small sips & I don’t want to. Maybe ok if you are very cold but as a regular beer… it was pretty terrible, I didn’t really want to drink enough of this to review it even – I had to just tick it. You could argue that I didn’t rate it ofr what it is or that it is not as bad as my rating suggest but I cannot give point to something I cannot drink. What is the point of a beer if you cannot nor want to drink any of it?

Bottle sample @ 18de Kerstbierfestival, Essen 2012. How to even rate this beer? The festival had this as a Glühbeer served at 65° or cellared. We went with the 65°, the result can be somewhat disheartening. Certain to be a hit or miss.

15/XII/12 - 75cl bottle @ Kerstbierenfestival (Essen) - BB: n/a - warm version (2012-1370) Thanks to the Belgian/Dutch ratebeer crew for sharing our beers!

Note: so, accoring to the brewer's facebook it's a very good idea to drink this beer warmed up to about 60 to 70°C, maybe with some extra sugar. Ok, if that's what he suggests, that's what we'll drink.
Clear dark brown to purple black beer, no noticeable head. Aroma: very spicy, cloves, caramel, mocha, beef stew, aniseed, sugary. MF: no carbon, medium to light body. Taste: sweet and sugary, some dark chocolate, spices, cloves, nutmeg. Aftertaste: bitter touch, mocha, cocoa powder. Man this sucks. What an idea. I notice above that he is promoting this as an aperitif as well (probably the cold version). Another very bad idea if you ask me. Aperitif beers should be crisp and clean, nice bitter, preferably blond (although I would settle for an Orval), a bit sourish if possible. Not a heavy dark 12% alcohol bomb.Retasting.
16/II/13 - 75cl bottle @ De Bistronoom (Oostende) - BB: n/a (2013-xxx)
Clear dark brown beer, very small off-white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of dried fruits, mocha, caramel, spices, cloves, some vanilla, cookie dough. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: caramel, mocha, chocolate, pretty sweet, cocoa powder, earthy, leather, alcohol. Aftertaste: dark chocolate, burnt caramel, mocha, bit spicy, some alcohol, cocoa powder, little sour. Definitely much and much better than the warm gluhbier thing they served in Essen. What an idea, brewmaster... :p
