Bottle from ChrisO. It pours cloudy deep a white head. The aroma is sweet, oily, toffee, earthy roast, candied fruit, glacé cherry, cherry cola and candy. The taste is dry, bitter, oily, cherry cola, toasty, spice, caramel, wood, tannin and leather with a drying finish. Medium body and fine carbonation carbonation. Really not bad for a vintage ale.

04/12/2015 - 33cl bottle (good until 2011) @home by courtesy of VACAS Dark brown colour, huge tanned head. Nose has Alvine scent (wood, sour, dark fruits, wine) hints of smoke, spices. Taste is dark matls, hops, pepper, hints of smoke. Bitter and spicy ending. Very nice still after all these years.

Presented as a ’smoked bock’ with five malt types and three hop varieties. Light beige, thin head, colour dark brown with ochre glow. Typical Rauchbier aroma of smoked meat, toasted bread, dried herbs, liquorice, red berries; taste a woody, bitter chocolatey maltiness, dry, clearly smoky but the smoke malt appears to be well-balanced against the other malts and is therefore not too overpowering, some dried fruits, hop bitter finish, bit of solvents. Another of their endless experiments but not the most successful at least to my personal taste.

Bouteille: Hazy, deep amber coloured, medium-sized off-white head; peated malt (not really smoked?), toasted malt, some fruits and a certain yeasty acidity in the nose; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, again with a delicate acidity, medium bodied; dryish and a bit tart yeasty and roasty finish. O.K., but more smoke please…
