One of the great things about collaboration brew days is the conversations we have while we’re brewing. Here are some of the best of the Q (and some A) resulting from our collaboration brew day on December 17:

Q: Do we have to brew today? I’ve got tickets to the Chargers game and Foreigner is playing the tailgate party!

Q: What the heck are you thinking? Getting three of San Diego’s most hop enamored brewers together and brewing a scotch ale!? One of the least hoppy styles in existence!?

Q: How long does it take to dump 10,000 pounds of grain by hand?
A: About 4 hours!

Q: How long does it take to weigh out 25 pounds of hops?
A: About 4 minutes!

Q: Are you intimidated by Chuck’s beard?
A: It’s all right, but come back when he looks like Billy Gibbons or Santa Claus. He’s got nothing yet on Cecil.

Q: Did you figure in the extract from the brown sugar when calculating the recipe?
A: Ummm, hey! How about we increase the target gravity from 19°P to 20°P, everyone good with that?

Q: What are the wort IBUs? 30!? You mean 130, don’t you? No?

Growler shared by Leifunk. Thanks! Deep glowing orange-brown. Very mellow, almost non aroma. Malt centered, minimal tinge of soapy hops off in the distance. True to style, doughy and medium bodied, could fit in in Scotland. All around mellow and sessionable, maybe some light smoke. Well executed.

Bottle: Poured a deep hazy amber color ale with a medium size off-white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of caramelized sugar with some toffee notes. Taste is quite sweet with lots of caramelized sugar and light toffee notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation and some apparent alcohol. Not bad but a tad too sweet for my taste with some alcohol noticeable and lacking the peat notes that I usually associate with the style.

Pours a fairly deep, copper brown with relatively thin head that dissipates quickly. Chocolate, licorice, and roasted malt apparent in the aroma. The flavor is relatively sweet, with a touch of sourness. Smooth, lightly carbonated. Chocolate, coffee and malt (maybe some raisin?) are present in the flavor.

Hazy deep brown coloured body with a muddy ruby glow and a thinnish, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of hops, yeast, sour grapes, cherries, must, hay and a bit of pit fruits - nice. Medium-bodied; Full toasted malt flavour with a lot of caramel and a lingering smokey flavour near the end - a touch of hops noticeable and the funky yeast and brettanyomics are noticeable actually. Aftertaste has a good balance of sugars, toasted malt, alcohol and an earthy spiciness. Overall, a surprisingly good beer, but surprisingly not really like much scotches. Not a bad choice for a beer to sample and given the size - very nice indeed. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Village Market (in the Ferry Building) in San Francisco, California on 19-March-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 21-October-2011.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 10/21/11

Aroma: The nose is sweet, some caramel, molasses/syrup, and a little dark fruit
Appearance: This one pours a hazy caramel-brown color with a small head
Flavor: The taste is fairly sweet as well, caramel, toasted malts, spice, and dark fruits
Palate: The body is fairly fully and drinkable, it has a sticky sweet feel, the alcohol is completely hidden
Overall Impression: This is a pretty solid Scotch Ale. It has a nice drinkability, and it really hides the booze well. It wasn't an absolutely amazing beer or anything, but it was still pretty good.
