Tap at ZBF’12, Leuven, Belgium: Hazy blond coloured brew with an taste of grapfruit and some aftertaste like an kind of American hoppiness.

On tap at ’t Pakhuis. Diacetyl bangs out of your glass. Butter, butter and butter and yes, also a touch of smoke. Rancid butter and cheap lemon sweets flavor. Distant earthy hops. Soft bitter aftertaste. Slightly alcoholic. After you have survived the butter mountain this beer is OK.

Zythos Bierfestival 2012, Leuven, Belgium. It pours clear gold with off white head of foam. The aroma offers up citrus and mango as well as a bit of garlic and asparagus like nuances. Hmm. The taste has garlic and onion bleeding into some citrus and it works pretty well. I also get some spicy hops and a touch of black pepper. All in all a tasty offering.

15cl sample @ ZBF’12.

28/IV/2012 - on tap @ ZBF 2012 (Leuven) - BB: n/a (2012-427)
Clear golden orange beer, big creamy white head, little stable, little adhesive. Aroma: sweet malts, ripe fruity touch, little floral. MF: good carbon, medium to full body. Taste: very fruity, pineapple, passion fruits, little sweet, peach candy, grassy bitterness. Aftertaste: little bit sweet, fruity, ripe mango, some citrus, bitter ending. Totally missed the smoke on this one. Weird.

Draught Very pale golden beer with a good, slightly fluffy white head. Malty nose at first, but then a very welcome invasion of noble EU hops, betraying the purpose of this beer. More citrussy, if as hoppy, in the mouth. Nowhere a USA IPA, but somewhere moving in that direction. Fruity (nectarine), floral with just enough, if unobtrusive maltbacking. Warming up, the finish gets (bitter) almondy. (Too) light bodied, certainly for its ABV. OTOH, it’s dangerously drinkable. By far the best ever tasted, hailing from this brewery. Hans, if you persevere, it might be the definitive break from the Sterkens mark. As to some of the other ratings and comments, for once, I found no trace of diacetyl, but then neither of smoke. I would never have ranged this under ’smoked’. The beer was at its last 150 litres, so it both might have disappeared with ageing?

Draft@modeste: hazy citrus colour with a white head, butery malts with lots of butter, some light whiskey malt, light spices, wood, citrus in smell but not really in taste, not getting any smoke, lots of spicey butter, odd thing
