This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

On draft at church key in DC. Pours a fairly clear copper with an off white head. Aroma of orange peel and cardamon. Mish mash of flavors, grapes and bubble gum. Not my favorite of the series.

Draft @ Lord Hobo, on 12/15/12. We got to enjoy the left over Stone from the 12/12/12 event. Color shows an unclear gold with thin constant, white head. It left behind light lace. Smell is sweet with lots of fruits, banana and clove like yeast. Grape for sure as well. Very much like a hefeweizen. The taste is a homerun for me! Complex flavors of Sauvignon Blanc grapes, yeast, Belgian candi sugar with a mild tartness from the grapes. A light bitterness is also here to balance the brew. I believe it comes from the spicy yeast. However, Stone does hops well… so what hop variety is undefinable at this point. The texture is similar to a dry white wine. This brew is like a white wine meets a Triple with a German Hefeweizen splashed in for good measure. Absolutely delicious!

Slight haze on this amber - gold beer. Small white head. Light crispy palate. Sweet malt and tangy muscat and orange. The floral additions seem to add dryness and sweetness. So nearly a very good beer indeed. I think a little more braveness with the grapes would have done the trick I believe.

Pours a crystal clear deep golden color with a huge fluffy white head that slowly recedes but leaves a fair amount of sticky lace on the sides on the way down. The aroma is filled with light brown sugar, sweet candy sugar and malts along with prunes, grapes, raisins, and a non descript floral smell. The flavor is much like the aroma promised. Sweet malts and dark sugars alongside dark pitted fruit. The flavor is quite vinous, but the caramel from the malt counters that quite nicely. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet light syrupy mouthfeel. This is the second time I’ve tried this beer, and honestly when fresh I really didn’t like it, it was too winey for my tastes. That being said, age seems to have done wonders for this brew and all of the ingredients seem to have melded quite nicely.

The pour produces a slightly hazy gold body with a thin, fleeting white head. The aroma is subtle, sweet fruity and a bit floral. The flavor starts with a tart aspect from the grapes. The hops don’t make themselves known here. The high carbonation level adds some carbonic acid to the vinous bite of this brew.

Er...Not really my cup of tea I guess. Starts out tasting something like a saison, but then the fruitiness becomes a bit intrusive. Pours a rather thin, golden yellow, with almost no head. Fruity aroma and flavor--some grape, some raisin, some rather bitter sourness with a cloying, sweet aftertaste. I bought it for the Stone name and am rather disappointed...

(Bottle, 0.65 l, at Pikkulintu, 20120209) The beer poured deep golden and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had mustard, fruitiness, honey and malts. Palate was medium bodied and sticky with medium carbonation. Flavours were honey, malts, mustard, fruitiness, hops, spiciness and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy, sweet and bitter. Very interesting brew and a good one, too.
