This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

Süßer Kaufummiantrunk zu dem später Fruchtnoten hinzukommen. Minimale Säure, weiterhin, wenn nun auch geringer, Kaugummi. Zu süß, zu künstlich. 9/8/8/8//8

Draught @ Moeder Lambic during the Stone vs Moeder Lambic event. Clear yellow colour with a small white head. Smells like spare ribs and hops. Tastes sour, applejuice and ’apfelkorn’. Good carbo, medium body.

draft@Stone vs. Moeder: slightly hazy orange with a white head, smells & tastes like sweet fruits (sweet white grapes, some apricot, peach,…) with a touch of fruity American hops, spicy Belgian yeast, slight malt, touch of white desert wine, plenty of sweet white, slight white pepper, spices, body is on the lighter side, wine grapes but unfortunately the whole thing isn’t as pronounced as I would have wanted it – I am referring to the grape-side

Draft @ Stone vs. Moeder event, Moder Lambic, Brussels.

Draught Small white head over faintly hazy pale ochre beer. Apricot, root spices, xhamomile again, citrus - coriander? Citrus again in the mouth, other grains, orange zeste, preserved oranges, mould. Slick, fruit filling. No new flavours in the aftertaste, but long-lasting citruszeste, and bit more vinous. Fruity, but not really great. I usually don’t like USA interpretations of what they think of Belgian strong ales, and this is not an exception.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 06/17/2011. The beer is a mostly clear orange-gold color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. The aroma is somewhat vinous with notes of Belgian yeast and cloves. Medium body with flavors of white grapes, grapefruit, yeast and sweet spices. The finish is fruity with a lingering yeast aftertaste. Above average overall.

Thank god Ive learned my lesson with Stone’s 22 oz bombers, and found someone to share this with. Really nice belgian ale, 9.5% is a little high abv for a truly enjoyable ale, but had about a quater of it in a tulip glass, and it was really a great beer.

On tap at The Common Table, Dallas. It pours a hazy orange colour with lively carbonation and a thin off-white head. The nose is spicy, bonfire, citrus fruit, and strong chamomile. The taste is caramel, orange, mango, pineapple, sweet white grape, wood, hay and strong chamomile, with a bitter bite towards then. There is a good balance of sweet and sour flavours. It’s really quite unusual, but enjoyable nonetheless.
