This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

Bottled@omhpertasting. Golden colour with a small white head. Aroma is very fruity, mildly alcoholic as well as a bit yeasty and spicy. Flavour is much the same in a rather balanced way. Pleasant and nice sipper.

Bottled. Hazy golden, minimal head. Vinous nose. Mid sweet with medium body, slick rounded mouthfeel. Quite freshening with whitw wine, coriander and floral notes. Low bitterness. The best Vertical Epic I can remember - less sticky, more aromatic and elegant.

Bottle: Pours a translucent, very light golden color with a thin sandy head. Nose is fruity Belgian yeast and the depicted grapes. The taste I’m getting is mostly the Belgian yeast, a bit fruity, and some dry florals. Seemingly the least impressive of the VE’s I had to date.

Location: Bottle at Nerd Beer Epic Weekend, 1/26/13

Aroma: The nose is sweet, with some grapes, other fruits, spice, and yeast
Appearance: The pour is a gold-orange color with a small white head
Flavor: The flavor is quite sweet, similar to the nose, lots of fruity and yeasty flavors
Palate: The body is light-medium, it is cloyingly sweet and sticky, with a heavy carbonation
Overall Impression:  It’s probably my least favorite of the Epics (other then the 04.04.04 that was definitely oxidized). It’s just too sweet for me to drink much more then a small sampling.
3.1: 7/3/6/2/13

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 2/27/11

Aroma: The nose has a lot going on: Belgian yeast, spice, flowers, and grapes are all present
Appearance: Pours a mostly clear golden-orange color with a small white head
Flavor: The taste has lots of spice and yeast with some fruity sweetness
Palate: The body is medium, the mouthfeel isn’t bad, but the palate just doesn’t quite flow
Overall Impression: Overall, this wasn’t the greatest one of the vertical epics for me, but it wasn’t bad either. It does pretty do what it sets out to do, combine Belgian yeast flavors and grape flavors together, but I just didn’t totally love that combination. Anyway, it is an interesting attempt that just doesn’t quite work. Maybe this one will improve with age.

Bottled:
Pours a somewhat hazy, pale orange colour with a small head. Sweet and somewhat sourish aroma with notes of honey, oranges and pine. Flavour is sweet and has notes of oranges, pine and alcohol. Tastes very belgian.

Clear, super clear, orange coloured body with a very thin, fast-dying white head - no movement at all. VERY potent aroma of vinifera grapes, coriander seed, hay, grass and a decent amount of yeast - smells more like a biere de garde or a saison than anything else. Full-bodied; Strong assertive and bitter grapes and metallic malt flavour at first with a large, biting metallic graininess. Aftertaste shows more of a malt liquor than a belgian strong - no complexities worth writing about - just a strong, bitter, not pleasing or refreshing beer. Overall, a very big miss - nothing pleasant with this aside from the concept, which clearly did not work. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Bon Vivant Market in Smithfield, Virginia on 14-October-2010 for US$9.15 sampled at home in Washington on 07-February-2011 a day before leaving for San Diego - not to try to find another one of these bottles!

Sampled on draft at the Rivertowne Pub this beer poured a dark orange-amber color with a small foamy orange-white head that produced no lacing. The aroma was sweetish and bready with notes of caramel and lime. The flavor was tart, bitter and bready with a strong lime note and hints of must and funk. There was a light pineapple and piney undertone. The finish was short with notes of bread and lime lingering. Fairly full bodied. Pleasant.

A golden amber ale with a thin white head. In aroma, a wine like offering with white grapes, light funk, quite nice.In mouth, a white wine with light wooden notes, herbal notes, grapes, belgian hopping, wonderful. On tap at Mr. Beery, Jan 3 2011.
